What program does everyone use to do Java Programming apps and games?

I was thinking about Photoshop but isn't that a little extreme for Java games/apps?

Do you mean making sprites and the like? In which case, I use paint. I haven't done alot of graphics programming though.

There simply isn't any real alternative to Photoshop for sprite design. Everything else is designed around photo editing.

If you know your way around a color palette and don't mind the lack of layers then Paint is a good lightweight alternative.


As far as graphics libraries then there are a couple of options outside of Java2D:

JOGL is a straightforward wrapper for OpenGL that will give you most of the features you'd get were you to program in C++.

LWJGL is a larger library that also handles audio, user input, and window management (among other things) on top of OpenGL. This is what Minecraft is built on.

Have to disagree here. GIMP may have much of the same features implemented, but as far as pixel editing goes you'd be better off using notepad to manually type the pixel values in. The only thing its even remotely useful for is editing photos.

Ah well, there's lots of GIMP haters, but I've used it for lots of reasons (least of all photo editing), including sprite creation and pixel editing, and my experience has always been pleasant.

Paint.net is what I use. When you first downoad it, it is pretty simple. But when you pimp it out with a heap of awesome plugins it can be a very powerful tool.

I guess it all depends on the quality of product you are trying to put out.

For my basic school-related work, I would just use something basic like a paint or gimp. Just enough to get my point across and something that would display the underlying code.

However, for my more advanced classes, and personal work, no I do not think Photoshop is overkill at all. Photoshop for my 2d work, and a little bit of blender for 3d. Just not any other options that provide the quality and that Photoshop does.
