Has anyone here ever done this or something similar before?

Here is what I'm working with:

HTPC : The one in my signature below (A6-3650), using on-board for everything (audio and video)! Running on Catalyst 12.1 and the corresponding driver!

AV Receiver : Yamaha RX-V671

HDTV : Samsun 67" DLP 1080p. TV has got HDMI 1.3 and hence no ARC!

Cables are all HDMI 1.4!

This is how I had them daisy chained before:

HTPC (HDMI) ----> AVR (Yamaha HDMI3) ----> Samsung TV (HDMI 1)

This worked fine the problem was with the resolution (the HTPC never filled the screen, or it stretched beyond it), now before anyone jumps at this and screams Overscan/Underscan, let me tell you I have played around with every bit of adjusting that is there to be done on all the three devices (PC, AVR and TV). None of them worked while it was connected like that, I tried adjusting underscan and overscan on CCC and changed resolutions on the PC, tried changing the TV picture size, turned off AVR video processing and set everything to through etc etc!

At last I took the AVR out of the equation and connected the PC directly to the TV and used HDMI 3/ DVI on the TV and named it PC, this was as per the suggestions I got here and on the net and was in the TV's manual as well. That fixed the display issue and now my display is almost full screen there is a 1 pixel black space on the right side of the screen, but that is hardly noticeable!

The problem with DLP is that the TV doesn't recognize the PC input when connected to the other ports and tries to adjust the resolution by itself and messes it up, but when connected via the HDMI 3/DVI input and when it is renamed as PC then it understands that it is a PC and it ...well .... behaves and doesn't throw a fit! smile.gif

When I shifted the AVR out from HDMI 1 to HDMI 3 of the TV the other devices connected to the AVR (STB, Roku, PS3) also get that one pixel line on the right, they are fine when hooked up as before to HDMI 1! So I would like to leave them as it is and just shift the HTPC to HDMI3 on the TV! Now the display is fine the problem is with the HD sound, since I use my 7.1 speaker set and the AVR for sound I would like to continue using that, especially for my Blu-Ray and MKV rips. If I step down to an S/PDIF connector instead of the HDMI then I loose the 7.1, if I use the crappy TV speakers for sound then I loose all the good stuff!

So here is how I'm planning to solve the problem,

1) Get a low profile discrete card like the HD Radeon 5xxx series! something like these! This is to add another HDMI port to the HTPC!

2) Run that as a separate GPU - on the PCI x16 slot I have. Llano iGPU can crossfire with a discrete card, but I think it has to be the 6xxx series, anyways I don't want that! I want this separate and have

3) Now I have 2 HDMI ports, so use them like this:

For Video: HTPC (On Board HDMI) ----> Samsung TV (HDMI 3 /DVI named as PC)
For Audio: HTPC (Discrete GPU HDMI) ----> Yamaha AVR (HDMI 4)

Now when I switch on the HTPC, I turn the TV onto HDMI 3 and AVR on to HDMI 4 and should have both HD video and HD audio right? Would this work, or do I have to do something in CCC or BIOS to get this to work other than disable crossfire?

Has anyone here set anything up in a similar fashion, if you have please share how you did it?

For Video: HTPC (On Board HDMI) ----> Samsung TV (HDMI 3 /DVI named as PC)
For Audio: HTPC (Discrete GPU HDMI) ----> Yamaha AVR (HDMI 4)

That will work and get rid of compatibility issue with HDCP and HDMI version.

Set the default Audio playback to Discrete GPU HDMI --> Receiver.

Thanks!

How do I set the default Audio playback to Discrete GPU HDMI --> Receiver? Is that within the CCC or somewhere else where I would change that setting!

Thank you! Great help! So there would not be any issue for video playback right, would the video still be passed on to the AVR and get processed, or is there a way to split video and audio signal when using HDMI!

You can set the Receiver as Extended Desktop because Windows sees it as a monitor regardless it's a receiver. Then set the the other monitor as "Primary" so all the default playback will be on the Primary display. The receiver is for sound only.

I picked the Radeon 5xxx series, something like this ASUS silent card based on what I read here that the 5xxx series supports - bit streaming HD check the table in the middle of the page!

Is that the best choice in your opinion or should I get something else, this sound card high end sound card is capable of doing the same, would that be a better choice?

I'm not sure about that and might give you the wrong answer as been out of that loop for a while.

It's good idea to make a thread here  HTPC. There are more knowledgeable users that might tell you the exact setup works best.

If you already have the 5450 and the receiver, why don't plug it in and give it a try.

6450 should have higher specifications than 5450;

All right thank you!

I don't own any of those cards already, I have two 6870's on my other sig rig, I could use that to try, I suppose! I do have the AVR, but none of those video cards!

If this setup works generally and it makes sense, then I will buy one and test it out!

Thank you again!

Yeah that is a smart move before buying additional hardware for the setup. I believe it sould work and you will have LPCM 7.1.

Another option would be:

6870 HDMI ---> Receiver ---> Speakers

6870 DVI ---> DVI-HDMI adapter ---> HDMI TV
