Washing Machine + Hyper212+

Thread Starter
Currently using a Hyper212+ to cool my i5-750 to 4ghz, but I have a question. Obviously the heatsink weighs a fair amount, and my case sits on the ground. My washing machine is in front of my computer in a different room and shakes the ground considerably, in turn, shaking my computer case. Can this shaking cause some extreme damage to the motherboard? I've had it on the ground for a while, and the shaking just makes me cringe thinking about it bouncing around

Find some foam or rubber and place it on your case's feet, it'll probably stop most of the shaking.

I can't cite any science as to whether the shaking will cause irreversible damage, but my intuition says that it's not a good idea.

The shaking, if violent enough, could, in theory, cause damage to HDDs running. Further, if your mobo isn't particularly durable, shaking or vibrations may cause a large or heavy heatsink to warp your mobo.

I have no authorities to support my assertions, and maybe someone can disprove me, but I wouldn't do it if I were in your position.

Oh man, this is not what I thought you were talking about at all. I was hoping you were going to ask if it would be safe to put the 212 in the washing machine.

Dang.

Oh, but you should try to put some cushion under the case to minimize the rumbling;

Pretty much everything that this guy said. Somebody needs to put their 212+ through a wash cycle now.

Foam padding, rubber feat, rubber padding, ooh, pretty much anything that will kill vibration.

The thing you want to worry about is your HDDs, probably the most.

I doubt your case would be vibrating so much to the point where you'd worry about your Hyper 212+.
However, if you were so inclined, you could always just tie a string/bungee cord to the top of your case.

You know those little foam tiles that you can get for your kids, to make a foam square, that you enclose them in so they can't hurt themselves?
Probably just one block of those, would do you well.

I imagine this will cut off most air supply from the bottom.

If the washing machine is shaking the floor that violently I can only imagine what its doing to your rig over a prolonged period of time. Move the computer further away from the washing machine.

haha I thought the same biggrin.gif

OP if it was my PC then I would either move the PC so it isn't shaking so much to protect the motherboard, heatsink, maybe the GPU and the hard drives.
Or at least I would put some rubber under the case or indeed a cushion to stop it from shaking so much. This could be wrong, it is just what I would do.

Check the springs inside the washing machine. There's probably one broken.
