Personal Review Asrock 990FX Extreme4

Thread Starter
I had just recently upgraded nearly my whole computer. I had upgraded many components but none that are so visibly changing as a motherboard. I upgraded cpu from a 955 to a 8120, 3gb ddr3 1600 to 8gb ddr3 1600. And finally the asrock 990fx extreme4. I have a few things to say about this motherboard.
I had nothing but problems as yet with this motherboard. Setting up raid was initially difficult and once figured out was smooth, reads and writes were as expected. But on the other case the drivers and even some of the utilitys that came on the disc would have better belonged in the trash.
The drivers worked as expected, some bugs that were fixed with updates, but the utilitys and even the bios became the barrier for a really good pc. Asrock instant boot literally made the computer unusable, it made it's own power plan, cool n quiet is not correctly bypassed when the power plan is set to high performance mode. Infact when instant boot was installed it wouldn't correctly load windows. Instead it will hang at odd moments and only load certain components, like sound would not load nor would the av. You are not able at all to run 4 dims of 2gb 1866. The highest speed it will even boot up on with all dimms installed is 1600. Also as a side note the memory timings are bugged, if you even attempt to change them the bios with create mouse clicks, locking them onto your screen and creating an error message that simply repeats until you forcably reboot the system. The mouse clicks are just a snapshot of where your mouse was when you clicked "ok" on the error message and would loop.

Also the systems habit of loading two bios screens. It will reboot and show a bios screen for a split second, then it will follow your boot up protocol. Like raid array checking and hard drive list. Bios-uefi time out list and then finally windows.

The board has great features, only if they worked correctly. There is no way to edit or run memory timings or speed of over 1600 with all four dimms. But the sata drives and all the accompanying drivers worked very well, I am not sure about overclockability, I got a 8120 from 3.1 to 4.3 with blend stability tests.

As a side note I would like to point out that my system provided strange physics testing results in 3dmark11, it scored nearly 1k higher than a 1100t clocked to 3.9 with a 6870. VS my 8120 at 4.3 and lower but more speed of ram and 2gb 5870 e6.

I hoped everyone enjoyed my quick little review and hope you don't have the same problems I did.

Here are a list of the parts used.

other than my front USB acting janky from time to time, no problems. my other problem is the new bios has an ugly green boot screen instead of the cold black brush steel look. i have my 1100T OCed to 4ghz and i'm running 2x dual slot video cards crossfire WITH a legacy PCI sound card. it also looks good in my blue and black theme. looks slick. i also opted to install the optional fan on the mobo heat sink.
