7970 Three S27A950D at 120hz / Eyefinity Cable Questions

post #1 of 46
Thread Starter
Just replaced my three U2410s with three samesung S27A950D Monitors as I wanted to get into the 120hz/3D.

My u2410 eyefinity used one active Mini DP to DVI (Single Link(, one Mini DP to HDMI and DVI to DVI, eyefinity worked great

My Samsung setup I ave a few options, I have a cable thats Mini DP to DP, then a dongle doing mini dp to dp converter, and then a Dual Link DVI to Dual Link DVI. 120HZ works on all three as individual screens. I switch to eyefinity and again all signals show 120HZ however when launching a game I get the BSOD 116 (ATIKMDAG.sys). I experienced this before when I wasnt using an Active connector.

My question would be, do I need a Mini DP to Dual Link DVI Active Adapter like this:

http://ca.startech.com/AV/Displayport-Converters/Mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI-Dual-Link-Active-Adapter–USB-Powered~MDP2DVID

I didnt need one before for Eyefinity

1. Do not overclock anything (CPU, RAM and GPU). Load BIOS Optimized Defaults.

2. Try different Catalyst for 7900.

3. There's no MiniDP-to-DVI-Dual-Link -Active-Adapter that supports 120Hz for AMD card.

S27A950D, DVI --> DVI --> 7970

S27A950D, DP --> DP-MiniDP Cable --> 7970

S27A950D, DP --> DP-MiniDP Cable --> 7970

1.) Tried
2.) Tried even clean format
3.) Read my post tongue.gif I have all combinations excluding a powered dual link

Same machine as I ran eyefinity on for months, never had an issue tongue.gif its the cable/dongle setup, not the system, please re read my post

See your telling me to do something even after I stated that the same setup ran fine on my U2410s, only difference here is cables and monitors.

I plugged my u2410s in with the cabling I had previously and it all worked like it did before

Even went down to one 7970 from the four I have so Im not sure

Have you installed the 'middleware' (ie TriDef or iZ3D) without any issue?

One main difference between your previous setup and the current setup is 3D/120Hz and you need the middleware.  Sorry for this obvious question but I just have to be certain.

Nice catch, Just tried it and still behaves the same, has to be the cables, someone much know if you need a dual link active converter maybe?

So, currently you are able to set up an Eyefinity Group at 120Hz with no problem until you launch a game?

First, frankly I am not sure if the problem is due to the lack of such a cable.

Secondly, note that AMD has listed two mini DP to Dual Link DVI dongles in their validated list and both do not support 120Hz 3D.  As I cannot find info of the Startech cable supporting 120Hz 3D, its chance of success is rather slim.

Actually ignore the 3d, the 120hz with two mini DP to DP and one DVI-D should work from what Im reading but it doesnt, hence why Im thinking you still need an active dongle in there. It will bsod even if I switch to an active single link to mini DP dongle. I tested all three of the 7970s each on at a time, behavior remains the same, cables listed above and my u2410s work fine

S27A950D, DVI --> DVI --> 7970
S27A950D, DP --> DP-MiniDP Cable --> 7970
S27A950D, DP --> DP-MiniDP Cable --> 7970

This isnt 120hz related, I just tested the cables, at 60Hz only and the second I launched any game in eyefinity it would BSOD, however going back to my u2410s with one DP Mini to HDMI, DP Mini to DVI and DVI to DVI works perfect, again only difference is the active link

Tested this setup with a single active cable which means two monitors at 120 and one at 60 and eyefinity launched fine with the active cable involved.

Ordered three different Mini DP to DVI-D Active Converters (Accel, Bizlink and Startech), hoping that will work. Anyone else running a triple 120HZ eyefinity setup?
