What impacts the video card OC?

In other words what limits it? Ive got my MSI 7900GT(stock overclocked version) clocked at 585GPU and 1660 DDR3 If i go further i get artifacts? So what causes that? My temp is at 40ish levels... SO what limits the overclocking? Thnx...
PS: Im using the "Coolbits" in the regestry... is there any batter way? Thnx

voltage

a volt mod will let you increase those clock speeds

well temps are aswell, but there's a point where even the lowest temps wont help if there isnt enough voltage.

A volt mod can be many things, there are :

pencil mod ( where the graphite from a pencil is placed on a certain transistor thus lowering the impedance and upping the voltage )

bios mod ( where using eg Nibitor , the voltages for vcore/vdimm are increased and then the new bios flashed with the new voltages )

hard mod ( where a certain things are soldered onto the graphics card to increase voltage )
