Wireless Problem

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
I have a Linksys N160 router and I have been getting dropped signals lately. Every 5 min or so, my PC disconnects from the router and the signal is gone. I have a TPLink adapter in my system and it has been working great ever since I got it. I think the problem is my ISP (Cox) or my router. My router is placed in the house's corner cause the cables (cox's cables) were too short. Any help is appreciated.

PS: my PC is 20 feet away from the router.
If the wireless is dropped from your computer, its a signal/router issue, not your isp.

When it drops out, do you lose wireless signal or does it remain?

have you tried turning the router off for 20 mins and powering it up again?

If possible try moving the router to somewhere with more space, move any devices that my cause conflicts with the signal like a wireless phone or mobile phone.

What kind of wireless card do you have in your computer?

Some lower end / older wireless cards do struggle with interference from anything like a wireless phone or even other wireless networks in your area broadcasting on the same channel.

My advice would be to try moving the router and or your pc and see if that helps, if it does, you might want to invest in a better wireless card.

hope that helps brah

I tried the power up and down method, but it still didn't work
When it drops, sometimes it shows the connection, sometimes it's all gone

As of 10 pm yesterday, I haven't been dropped. Is it like rush hour thing or something?

well since you have the wrt160n why dont you flash it with dd-wrt, it will improve your router all round thumb.gif

one of dd-wrt main benfits is improving wireless smile.gif
btw, your router is compatable aslong as its not the rev 2 model

Then I would look at your wireless card and try seeing if theres a firmware update for it, if that doesnt work you can try uninstalling it and re-installing it from device manager. I havent used that brand of adapter but does it use its own software to manage the wifi? I had a D-link that had its own software and it caused nothing but problems. I find it hard to believe its the router because typically if a router is the problem then the other device on the network will at least have similar symptoms at some point.

Now other devices on wireless aren't dropping?
If they are i'd say put a Laptop Cooler under it.

As for the Computer could the Wireless Adapter be overheating.

Owner of a POS WRT 400N until I put a Laptop Cooler under that.
That series is known for over heating.
The E1000, E2000, E3000 were the revised versions.....
