I use both. Although 90% of the time I'm using my remote with IR receiver.

So here's what I've ordered so far:
Case: Silverstone GD06
Mobo: ASUS P8H67-M Pro
CPU: i5-2300
PSU: Silverstone 700 W
SSD: Mushkin 120 GB
Optical Drive: Asus Blu Ray Drive capable of 3D
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8 gb (2x4)
IR Receiver: HP MCE USB (supposedly this works well with XBMC & Harmony Remotes)
OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home OEM

- Honestly, this is probably way overkill for what I'm gonna do with this machine, but I figured nothing wrong with having a machine better than what you need it for.

Anyway this is what I'm still unsure on:

GPU: Looking at MSI 560 Ti OC II, gets great reviews, will do Bluray 3D, I'm sure will play media for just about any size HDTV I can throw at it. Would allow me to play Battlefield 3 on my HDTV just for fun...I think. However, say I don't plan to play ANY games on this machine, and just going to use it to surf the net, and stream media (including 3D Bluray) what would you guys recommend instead for a GPU?

HDD: Right now I haven't picked one out yet because I still have some USB external hard drives I can attach to this thing. However, I do know I eventually want a main HDD inside to store movies, music, pictures. Right now I have these options:

1) WD Green 2 TB 6.0/gbs 64 mb cache- $120
2) WD Green 3 TB 3.0/gbs 64 mb cache - $250
3) WD Green 3 TB 6.0/GBS 64 mb cache - $300

- The original build recommended the 3 TB but at more than double the cost of the 2 tb, I'm not sure if it's really a good deal. Also trying to figure out if 3.0 gbs vs 6.0 gbs really even matters for this component?

An i5? Heck, and i3 is overkill! I use an i3 in my main rig for everything and get plenty of processing power. Why not get a cheap AMD Dual Core or a new Intel Pentium?

I am using an e4500 with 4gb of ddr2-800, $20 case mounted in a basket (mounted a fan on the back for cooling), cheap MB, ATI 4350 (HDMI out). A few TB in ed green drives.

Sounds like your going way to high end to me for an htpc smile.gif. I have a Lenovo RF keyboard / trackball (hand held). We use it for Netflix, media center, dvr ota TV (cable free), watching HD rips ....no problems for 2 years or so. Total cost was around $400.

I built my GD06 rig last year. This is what i have in it. I don't game on it; I have a separate rig for that.
I3 2100
Asus P8h67 m pro
MSI 5450
Silverstone strider 500w modular

Lenovo N5902 wireless media keyboard/trackpad - works really well.

I have 4 Hdd's in it and 1 SSD, works really well; my PS is overkill but I wanted the least expensive modular power supply and this fit; I had to flip it around with the fan facing upwards in order for the HDD dock to fit which it was meant to do.

I've had an issue with the case though; both HDD lights in the hot swap bays stopped working, one went then a month later the other one went. Also the reset wire broke off the reset button which I was pretty dissapointed with. The front panel on my case is tough to open; I have to push in the middle of the front to get it to open just enough for my fingernail to grab it on the top right corner and open; just thought it was going to be a little more easier to flip down, it could just be my box but never know. I'm also not a big fan of the lock showing on the front after all this time.
I think if I were to do it again I would chose the Silverstone Lascala LC 13B; its quite a bit deeper but could still fit in my rack. I don't need the hot swap bays and find I don't like the way they were done; IE part of the cage is also part of the front fascia behind the door and the Lascala costs pretty much the same and has a cleaner front IMO.

My HTPC is probably overkill too; it can play 23GB blue ray files no problem; send DTS HD/DolbyHD with no probably; not even breathing hard but I wanted something a little future proof.

Happy building; good luck with your HTPC!smile.gif

I use the Remote+ Pro iPhone app to control my HTPC. It essentially turns my phone into a giant trackpad for controlling the mouse. I found it much more handy than using my Harmony remote for most functions. I also use the iMON interface to power on/off through my Harmony, so the setup works well for me.

Also, Noiseblocker fans are your friend if you want decent airflow whilst being whisper quiet.

Hey guys, just wanted to hear your thoughts on my HDD options:

1) WD Green 2 TB 6.0/gbs 64 mb cache- $120
2) WD Green 3 TB 3.0/gbs 64 mb cache - $250
3) WD Green 3 TB 6.0/GBS 64 mb cache - $300

- The original build recommended the 3 TB but at more than double the cost of the 2 tb, I'm not sure if it's really a good deal. Also trying to figure out if 3.0 gbs vs 6.0 gbs really even matters for this component?

Yeah, I'm looking at a Sandy Bridge 2.4 Ghz celeron dual core for mine. More than enough for video and recording TV.

You dun need a 6gb/s traditional mechanical drive for mass storage so what hdd u nab depends on your budget, needs, etc wink.gif
