What's the preferred path for coolant?

Thread Starter 
Is it:

1) Reservoir -> Pump -> CPU block -> Radiator -> ... back to reservoir.
...or:
2) Reservoir -> Pump -> Radiator -> CPU block -> ... back to reservoir.

I thought number 1) was the norm, but I've saw setup 2) being mentioned a few times.

It doesn't matter. Temperature will even out to be approximately the same everywhere in the loop. That being said, if you have many high heat components, it doesn't hurt to put a radiator between them to eliminate discrete hot spots.

I am finding radiator placement is key. The Loop setup equalizes in temperature over time but having all radiators in good placement for high airflow and keeping cool air interacting with the radiator has the biggest impact on temperatures.

The only high heat component will be the CPU (3930K), as it's a CPU only loop.

I was going to go with a 120 radiator, but seeing as I'm changing case I could probably accomodate a 240 which will be located in the upper/top part of the case with some San Ace's.

With just a cpu only loop, the pump puts out 20W in loop, which is 0.05C water temp difference before and after for 1.5gpm , and it doesnt matter if your talking before or after equilibirum (steady state delta air to water) the same 0.05C temp difference will exist. And no way could you measure the 0.05C difference by having the pump before or after rad.

If you have a gpu in loop at idle, then 40W heat from idle gpu, then it makes 0.1C difference for loop order, and 0.2 to 0.3C for 2 gpus (idle) (again assuming 1.5gpm).

If your folding at home and max loading cpu and 2 gpus at same time, and you care about 1C difference (assuming 400W 2gpus in water and 1.5gpm), then loop order can decrease cpu temps by 1C (including at steady state) by doing rad then cpu, though again without equipment, you wont be able to measure the 1C, since ambients fluctuate to much.

No difference at all. Vapor did a test on this a while back using 3(!) MCP355 pumps in series. Even with the huge pump heat dump the differences were pretty much non-existant, the highest difference he saw was ~0.2°C. Remember this is with the heat dump from three 18W pumps, with one pump you will probably not be able to measure the difference.

His conclusion was:
