(thinking about) Doing a Ubuntu Comp, compatibly question.

Hi guys

Right so, long story which I won't bore you with, friend + first build = disaster.

I had got him some parts for Christmas, I still have the Q6600 and a decent-ish graphics card and most of the stuff. BUT does anyone know any mobos that work OOTB with Ubuntu 11.10 x64? everything working, all 'Tommy Coopers'* running at full capacity, audio, video, everything?

i'll probably put XP* on too or Vista (SP2 of course), but I would like him to have Rakarrack on it hooked up to Audacity so he can kinda have a jerry rigged Garageband Alt*.

the mobo HAS to be cheap cheap cheap please.

and have: okay sound, PCIE, and take the Q6600 OOTB, oowh 4 RAM slots would be a big plus.

too much to ask? probably. but there's no harm in asking smile.gif

thanks

peace

Dava

I'll rep anyone who can confirm this (youtube vid or anything) on a board for less than £30, includes eBay UK. help please.

Just shop around and check on the Audio chipset and NIC chipset for Linux compatibility/easy working.

I've heard that JACK and OSS4 are the best for music production so familiarity with them would be recommended.

PS: All of my computers sound better (onboard chips) through Linux and ALSA than they ever did in Windows so even if it sounds bad in windows you might be surprised with Linux.

Also, if the GPU has HDMI you'll have to check to see that it is disabled from being the default sound device.

Hope that helps you get started.

Most things work OOTB when it comes to Ubuntu/Linux Mint. Only some sound cards and wireless devices have trouble with Linux. Do as Rookie suggests. Nothing else to add really.

It's not OSS4 and jack, it's OSS4 or Jack + ALSA. Honestly, ALSA is getting real good. I do still prefer OSS4 but not everything works nice with it so I'm back with ALSA these days.

Rothen has it right too, everything should work OOTB. You might run into minor things or obscure hardware that doesn't work but only the crazy sound cards (all X-Fi should work now) like Xonar (model pending) and stuff might not work. All graphics cards work but steer from AMD if you can, go Nvidia as I know (and everyone else here knows) that they work better.

Outside of that, I don't really see any hitches.

[hmm] I should clarify, all sound works with OSS4 but certain programs just don't play nice off the bat. I generally have to build Audacious as not many build it with the OSS4 flags. I had to re-build wine sometimes, kmix doesn't work (so none of my volume keys work right unless I manually modify them to call ossmixer). Over all it's not too bad and if your looking for the best in audio quality OSS4 wins. But honestly a gurage band doesn't care about that, you'll get more from recording that by acoustics than by switching to OSS4.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'm not there to help him (he lives 15 miles away in Paisley), but I think it's the jack server that's malfunctioning, thats my best guess from over the phone. I *want* to create a 'Mac like' experience for him, as I recently found out his technical abilities are not up to scratch, poor to say the least and gets stressed at the smallest things.

my ex had a HP T3300 desktop, it ran Ubuntu like a dream, Jack worked OOTB, with Patchage and Rakarrak, it had an old P4 which I stuck in a C2D and wow. it was like a Mac mini! fast and pretty faultless, I want to give him the same kinda thing.

anyway went on a bit there (sorry), I found a board I liked and it was cheap an ASRock G31 mATX, I don't have the cash just now, but I thought it looked like the solution.

any ideas, comments, known problems?

I never got try out my G31 base with Linux as I sold my Q6700 setup before I started Linux but my ECS board was supposedly quite friendly with Linux and it could OC a 1066 FSB CPU pretty decent for a 30USD board (Got it in 2008) since I managed to take my Q6700 from 2.66GHz to 3.1GHZ without any voltage change. Again you just have to check on the specific onboard audio chipset and the NIC chipset for how well they are supported (or not supported). I didn't see you mention anything about the GPU you were going to put in the thing so as long as you avoid one with HDMI the audio work should be simply just getting OSS4 or JACK going and things playing nice with it. I doubt with a chipset that old that the NIC will be a problem.

oh the GPU is a Palit GF116 DDR3 GTS450. yeah it has HDMI, not that he'll use it, his TV is a CRT so he just uses a big VGA monitor. will that be a problem??? :S

I was hoping I could throw in the gaming side of things too, do you think I'm over shooting this? even just XP and he could start steaming with the game I bought him, wow I bought him a lot last year! he kinda lost his job and I felt bad for him.

I'll get to the chipset soon, thanks smile.gif. my head is fried just now, but yeah defo need to check that out!
