Help Overclocking please :)

Hey guys, I have a crosshair IV formula, 1055T, and 1600mhz mushkin blackline enhanced ram.

I have my CPU at 38.62mhz right now, been trying to hit 4.0 before i stress test. I'm on water.

My ram stock timings are 7-9-7-24 and I was able to push them to 7-7-7-21 but I had to lower the frequency to 1100. The next option was 1467 in my bios, but windows wouldn't start.

Question is does that matter? The FSB:DRAM ratio is 1:2, which is where it should be I believe, but I am worried about running 1600mhz ram at 1100, is it hurting me or should I keep it low and see if I can get some 6s in my latency?

Thanks!

What voltage do you have on the cpu? Sounds like you could just give it a little more to hit 4.0 since your on water.

Its at 1.512v right now, multi is 14 and bus is 275. HT is 2200.

The memory thing is fine I'm assuming?

Just redid WEI (because I'm not sure what to use to test memory speed) and it increased by from 7.6 to 7.7 so hoping that it is actually faster at 1100 and tight timings vs 1600 and looser

Well nevermind about going higher on voltage then, that's high as I'd go.

Yeah I figured voltage was at about max. I'll try and lower the timings some more, if not I should be able to get 4.0, didn't do too shabby at vantage with 3.8

Neither tighter latencies not faster frequencies above 1333 MHz. with DDR3 RAM show any tangible performance gains in real world apps. according to extensive testing. Synthetic benches show small gains but they don't tend to show in real apps. AMD APUs would be the only exception as the CPU and GPU get a RAM speed bump, which is particularly useful for the GPU.

There is FAR more to be gained by OC'ing the CPU speed so I'd try to keep the RAM frequency around 1333 MHz. or less and run the CPU as fast as possible stable. RAM latencies can be whatever is required for the best CPU OC. As the frequency increases one clock cycle becomes less and less in real time.

Since the DDR3 RAM isn't a bottleneck there isn't much to be gained. Some folks have OC'ed the FX CPU RAM to 2400 MHz. and seen ZIP for performance gains because the RAM is not limiting performance.
