How can I make my router better? Change the bios?

A while back I asked some advice on buying a new router. (I still have the same router). People told me I could buy one and put a better bios on it to make it run allot faster. At least I think they said change the bios. This is the router I have

Its not much but it does get the job done while gaming. There are allot of bad reviews on it but I have not had to many problems with it. I would just like to squeeze all the juice I can get out of it.

I am not sure I follow, routers atypically work or don't work. If you are connected by a wire, there isn't really much you can do to improve that, usually your modem and service is the bottleneck.

You can always see if you have a custom firmware that unlocks features, you would want something like a DD-WRT version that matches your DLINK model.

You can also look at changing your DNS servers that can improve some websites loading and better routing over your ISP's DNS servers.

Google has one: 8.8.8.8 or visit OpenDNS.com

as far as it running faster,
i'm not exactly sure about that,
but you can gain more control over your router by flashing it with different firmware such as Tomato or DD-WRT:

at the very least, I can tell you that your router is very compatible with DD-WRT
DD-WRT is one of the most well regarded options as far as custom firmware, and there a lot of possibilities with it, so it's something you should definitely look into, regardless of your speed problems

good luck.

Yeah, like I said, don't want you thinking it will unlock crazy bandwidth, but it has been known to unlock features and even add features to your router. Most of these though are high end router features that you may or may not know how they work. It just unlocks your router so you can see more of the advanced routing configurations available to you.

You can overclock some routers, but not really recommended since it tends to make them run hotter and cut out and end up dieing faster. You can also boost the range some by upping transmission power (again, not always a good thing, and depends on your router).

DD-WRT (and Tomato) just give you more options and control over the routers settings.

If you do it, make sure you read up on the process for your specific model (and version # if it has one) to make sure you do it right, because it is possible to brick it if you do it wrong.

I know DD-WRT has a pretty good Wiki and support forum, and I would guess Tomato does too (never used it so I don''t know, but have heard really good things about it also).

Make sure you have the right router down to the revision number. Example here is your router w/ Rev E3

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-615_rev_E3

This isnt really for your average user... You should have a reason before attempting this and also have a backup router because you can brick your router doing a firmware upgrade.

With that said you can turn this router into a wireless repeater or bridge or things like that. I have 4 old linksys wrt54g that i use for bridges and these things are just beast with WRT-DD installed. They never stop working... i can unplug and put in the garage for a year and all of a sudden need a repeater and pick it up plug it and it jumps right back onto my network and performs as needed.

I just updated to 2.27RU firmware, every thing seems smooth. How do I get to the DD-WRT settings? Does it add it to the Dlink http://192.168.0.1 controller? What settings should I change to get better performance .

Read all you can HERE (mainly the About, FAQ, Install and Tutorials) and in the link Stiz posted.
Everything is explained on their pages.

The D-link firmware will be replaced by the DD-WRT firmware. It is basically a form of linix (as is the stock d-link) that gives you a different interface and access to more options.

You really need to read up on everything you can 2-3 times if you don't want to brick your router.

I believe DD-WRT access is defaulted to 192.168.1.1, but you can change it to 192.168.0.1 (or whatever you want) once you have finished flashing it

Exactly as stated above.

Where routers stock firmware have some nice options.. its VERY user friendly.

DD-WRT is very complicated and even if you get it installed you can easily screw up your settings.

Knowledge is key in this one.. and there are plenty of guides. But i cant stress enough have a backup router before you head down this street.
