Help with first build

Thread Starter
Hey guys, been lurking here for a couple of weeks now and I'm finally good to go (cash wise) for my first build.

This build is for my school work as well as games like Skyrim, Mass Effect series, Diablo III and probably many others (I'm just getting back into PC gaming after many years of console gaming). 1080p resolution will keep me happy.
I have most of it planned out but some input from you guys would be great, I just wanna be sure I'm getting the best bang for my buck and not wasting money anywhere.

Budget is $1200 incl. tax (will be $60 max), Canadian for everything, I need HDD unfortunately as well as a keyboard and monitor (I have a mouse at least), I MAY consider SLI at some point in the future but I'm not 100% on that, also plan on OC to 4-4.5Ghz.
Unless there is a good reason not to I will just be buying from Memory Express here in Canada (it's close, no shipping to deal with and from what I've seen prices are basically the same as any website I have found).

Here's what I've come up with so far:

CPU/MOBO combo:
i5 2500k/Asus P8Z68-V Gen 3 - $379.99

or
i5 2500k/Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 - $349.99

CPU Cooler:
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO - $34.99

RAM:
2x 4GB sticks Corsair Vengeance LP 1600Mhz - $49.99

GPU:
eVGA 560ti 2GB - $284.99 (-$20 MIR, so $264.99) Critique definitely appreciated here, would like to stay nvidia, picked the 2GB because a 448 core won't work with the budget and I heard SLI only uses memory from 1 card, so this would be a better choice for that?

PSU:
Corsair TX750M - $104.99 (Not too sure if this is overkill or a good choice. Also is fan size compatible with vent hole on case?)

HDD:
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 7200rpm - $89.99 (ridiculous but I'm coming from a laptop which I would like to keep functional so I need it)

Case:
CoolerMaster HAF912 - $59.99 (Picked for airflow, cable management and space, also seems to be highly recommended on a budget)

Optical Drive:
Samsung SH-243D - $26.99

Keyboard:
Logitech MK120 - $19.99

Wireless Network Card:
Suggestions would be appreciated here as I've had some ridiculous issues with these things in the past, even at close range (disconnect every 30 seconds is not cool).
Range is not an issue as the router is right behind me but due to the configuration of the room it isn't practical for me to run a cable to it or move it.
$39.99 as a placeholder value for this.

Monitor:
Asus VH236H 23in 1080p - $179.99 (-$20 MIR, so $159.99) Chosen for size, 2ms response time and because it looks like a good monitor, feel free to offer suggestions (may need to go cheaper) but I would like to keep size at around 23in if possible.

Total so far with the more expensive Asus board in the budget, is 1271.89 before tax and before $40 of MIR's.
Obviously I'm a little over my budget so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys and sorry for the long post.

Edit: Also Calgary NW/NE is the region I'm in so parts will need to be in stock in one of these two areas.

NCIX pricematches, and I highly recommend them for the service they offer.
Pricematching shaved $100 off of my purchase with them, which was very helpful
For PSU, you can easily get away with a 650W and still have overhead. I would also suggest a modular PSU IF you can fit it into your budget. I know if I could go back, I would definitely opt for modular. Makes everything easier.

Your list of components seems good all around. I don't understand your choice for a 2.5" HDD. What does your laptop have to do with anything?

Better cases than the Haf 912 can be found for cheaper, though it's dependant on your choice for aesthetics.

You can consider looking around on OCN Marketplace, good deals can be had :

$35 shipped, for example

Ok, I will bump down to the 650w. I do believe that drive is 3.5in, doesn't specify on ME website but on other sites I have seen it listed at 3.5in.
Laptop was mentioned because I have seen people suggest using old hard drives (even laptop ones) to save cash.

I will look at getting NCIX to pricematch as well as a better case. Do you have any ideas for things I can look at besides the source 2.1? I'm not so worried about aesthetics as I am about space and good ventilation (a couple of included fans are a bonus too).

Does anyone know why my links aren't working?

Ok I quickly pieced together a build on NCIX
On top of this price, there is a $50 MIR (20+20+10), and free ground shipping for your whole order.
Including

Following changes:
1. 500GB seagate hard drive.
2. Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 Motherboard
3. Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Frostbyte RAM - personal preference, though most OCN members will back me up on their quality.
4. Corsair TX650W.

$1094 CAD, before taxes and MIR.
With taxes (BC 12% PST) and environmental fee: $1236, minus $50 MIR -> $1186.
I didn't factor in the wireless card, but I'm sure someone else will help you find a good one.
What wireless band are you using ? (N/G)

Saw you wanted advice on a wireless card. I'd recommend this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127218

I've had it for several months now and it works great. I'll admit it's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for, and the PCI cards seem to be more reliable than the usb adapters.

Wow that is looking much better already, thanks.

Couple of things though. The 448 core won't be able to go in as you price matched with a 384 core ti and I'm sure they will check it out first, that's fine though.

Also I'm assuming I won't be paying 12% tax since I'm in Alberta or do I get stuck with that regardless (NCIX based out of BC?).

I'm currently running in N/B/G mixed mode, dunno much about the differences in the modes but I assume whatever one will work ok for me?
Aurora that wireless card you posted looks nice, maybe a little overkill for my needs with the 3 antennas but I will keep it in mind, thanks.

Just noticed you wanted canadian webstores, so I'll stick to that. I did some more looking and found this card:

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54850&vpn=DWA-525&manufacture=D-Link

It's considerably less, and since you're in the same room as the router, the one antenna should work just fine.

Thanks aurora, it's now a toss-up between that card and a similarly prices asus one I found a while back. I'll read some reviews and try to decide between the two.

Also +rep to all of you who have helped me so far now that I know about that function thumb.gif

Currently taking the build that dmanstasiu posted up and recreating/altering it slightly (little things like couldn't find that same price on the seagate drive on my account) as well as browsing for more potential price matches.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I assume the monitor and video card I chose are pretty decent for the price since no one has suggested anything different so far?
