I would say crossfire is worth it, especially when you're already at that high tier of graphics cards. As for microstutters, I never had an issue with that when I has 2 5770's in crossfire. The upgrade was 100% noticeable though... everything is so smooth!

Keep in mind Crossfire is only worth it, if you play a lot of games that supports it.

not all games supports SLI or Crossfire if the game itself doesn't run on Full screen natively

even for games that do officially supports SLI or Crossfire natively in full screen, they lose support for SLI / Crossfire when you switch the game to Window mode.

So, if you plan to play games in Window mode, to be able to use other stuff like IRC, IM, Skpe whatever, browse a website, and look up walkthroughs, run several instances of the same game to ***cough***hack***cough***memoryspoof***cough*** while playing single or multiplayer tittles.... then Crossfire might not do what you want, instead invest on a newer more powerful single card that can outperform your current card on Xfire setup like a single 7970 for example, but forget the 7990 as that is basically 2x 7970 in 1 card on crossfire

I had CF'd Radeon 6970 and it was pretty good for Eyefinity 5760x1080p, i had to turn off goodies like AA/HBAO on newer games.

When playing on 1 screen there was noticeable microstutter on some games (Darksiders 2, Sleeping Dogs) while it was not as bad on others (Witcher 2, Max Payne 3) - if you go CF route - do yourself a favor and dont actively measure microstutter, if it doenst bother knowing about it then its all good

I personally had to get off CF once i noticed microstutter in CF - Sleeping Dogs was crazy in that how it was "smoother" with 1 card than it was with 2, using a program that measures it the variance between frametimes was drastic

I then sold both my 6970s and replaced it with a 7970, and total performance is slightly down - but i use less power, generate less heat and have close to 0 microstutter

If you could, id sell your card and go single - unless youre dead set on going Eyefinity
post #15 of 29
Eyefinity + Crossfire double the fun double the tweaking.
Crossfire will definitely have you spending a bit more time tweaking, but I suspect anyone who posts on here won't really mind it.
Also, you definitely will encounter games that just dont work well with Crossfire.

However, in my experience with two 6950s, most games work just fine with CF, and any tweaking is pretty simple.
I have not encountered any micro stutter, in fact games run really butter smooth with CF + Vsync + frame cap.

Usually 50% of the time, on new titles, you get no benefit of CrossfireX. Nvidia is the same way as this. What nobody tells you that AMD Drivers have a tendency to BSOD a lot more in CrossfireX, so you do have some stability concerns to deal with. Even my 7970s BSOD at various times for no apparent reason other than having CrossfireX Enabled. I would say that 90~95% of all issues stem from Catalyst Drivers and their Associated CAP (Catalyst Application Profiles) and for the most part, do get fixed over time. Some games or bugs never seem to get fixed, others feel like they get fixed in their sweet time. However, that being said, I still think the rewards far out weigh the risks. When you start having any trouble you can always revert back to using one card, and it is completely painless. Having only one card on the other hand won't ever give you double performance when you need it.
I wish you the best of luck in your choice!

Not sure what you are spouting there. Your experience does not make it everyone. If you are generalizing it, then I will to in saying THEY NEVER BSOD. See my sig-rig - crossfire for day 1 and NO BSOD due to crossfire. Honestly, if u want to find the real problem of your BSOD, you can look in the mirror.

I can definitely vouch there's no BSOD at all

and in my rig, i don't have micro stutter as some people claim to have

a lot of people use Sleeping Dog or BF3 as base of comparison, and on both games they run butter smooth, maybe, just maybe because my rig was mega expensive, and the i7 or the 2x 16x PCI-E slot is making a difference

or maybe the 12.6 or 12.7 drivers are just perfect

something must be going well in there thumb.gif

All my speed are Stock speed, i don't OC my rigs that runs 24/7 x 365

I do seldomly OC just to play with Benchmarks, but i return them back to sock speed after that wink.gif

I should also point out my CF setup is on a cheap mobo and my cards run @ 4x mode; a less than optimal setup hardware wise; despite this performance is solid and the stutter that I was really worried about doesn't show.

Regarding drivers, while on individual games (cough Skyrim cough) show difference with different drivers, most games show no difference and run as well from 12.1 to 12.8 drivers.

Anytime you run crossfire your system is going to be less stable than if you were running a single graphics card. That doesn't necessarily mean crossfire is going to be unstable, but anyone who runs crossfire knows that you might end up with more stability issues than if your were running a single card. I've found the reason is usually a problem with the drivers, especially for newer cards. Cards that have been out for a while do much better in crossfire because they've had time to find and correct any errors in the drivers.
