Dissapointed in the stickied water cooling articles

Thread Starter
I'm frustrated with the intro to watercooling threads here: [updated] Water Cooling Essential Thread . I'd like to archive my feedback on the 4 written guides in the hopes that someone makes a new guide from it, or perhaps after I build my first water loop I'll be able to make/contribute one. I watched several of the videos and found them to be too time inefficient.

Water cooling guide for noobs Some of the sections are incoherent. There are also statements that are surely false, though may have been true when the article was written?

There are great water blocks out there for the CPU and Gpus. If you are going for the absolute best one out there. Then the EK HF is the king right now. Ek is also the best for gpus as well.

I don't believe this introductory section could help anyone:

What is water cooling. More or less it is the same way how your car's radiator works to cool your engine except on a smaller scale .

Water Cooling FAQ to get n00b's started

This thread is really a guide of common components and vendors as of 2009. It doesn't define considerations in picking out fittings and barbs (or a definition of a fitting/barb... after spending many hours reading/watching these guides and writing this thread, I still don't know what a fitting is... is it just the size of the tube??). It also doesn't give a complete list of what is needed to make a water loop.

[Guide] How to put together a basic loop (Version 1.2)
It's very nice to see a parts list, but nothing defines what the parts are. Reading 'Zinc Plated Jubilee Wormdrive Clip 3/4" OD' doesn't tell me anything. The 18 steps would be useful if I already had everything ordered, but it doesn't really help a beginner.

Water Cooling Guide was written in 2004 and is only pointing to a broken link.

Water Cooling Is by far the best reference for someone first trying to learn about water cooling because it gives basic definitions of most of the parts. This thread should be the basis of the introductary section of a new thread (though it could probably be cut in half without losing any of the content).

I would suggest an introductory guide to water cooling consist of:
1. Definitions, this should be at most 250 words of text. Barbs, Fittings, Tubes, reservoirs, Pumps, Blocks, radiator, others...?
2. How does the hose specifically connect to the radiator? How does it connect to a block? A single picture of each option (compression verses ??? verses ???) is probably the best way to explain it. This is probably the single most confusing issue for a noob that wants to make a water cooling loop.
3. All the items needed for a cpu & 2x gpu water-loop. How many feet of tubing (5' to 20'?), how many barbs(12 to 18?), how many blocks(3?), how many radiators(1 to 2?), how many pumps (1 to 2?)
4. A very brief description of what to consider with each component
  • Barbs- Compression verses something else? One is better but more expensive? Barbing size needs to match hose size, right?
  • Fittings- After reading guides for over an hour, I'm still not sure what this means. Is it hose size?
  • Tubes- Why get 1/4" vs 1/2"? What is most common? What is easiest vs cheapest vs best performance. Don't discuss the color of tube to pick, we are noobs.
  • Reservoirs- Why are these needed? Should it be large?
  • Pumps- Are there standard measurements for flow strength or pressure? Is there a rule of thumb for how much strength is needed per foot of tubing or radiators? Are more expensive pumps quieter?
  • Radiator- Any rule of thumb about how many mm of radiator per component? Wider fins for lower rpm? Do radiators have a specific size for the barb? Does a barb go into the radiator?
  • Other items??
5. A list of current vendors and websites that has a [last updated] tag and a sentence of two describing what they specialize in or any other considerations.

Right on!!
I am on the verge of a custom loop build, but have ZERO knowledge.
