Upgrade for Phenom X4 B50

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm not necessarily looking to do this right now but I'm getting pretty close to the point where my CPU may need upgrading.

Basically I have a Phenom X2 550 unlocked to an X4 B50 and running stable at 3.5GHz. The main issue is that my Mobo only supports up to a Phenom 970 according to the ASUS website which would barely be an improvement and definitely not worth the cost unless the OCing potential would make a huge difference.

Obviously I had looked at the Phenom 975/980 but that would require a new Mobo and then I could switch to Intel although I'm not sure that the Intel option would be better than a Phenom 980 which could potentially yield 4.0Ghz+. Then I may have to replace my Zalman 9700 cooler though. I could go on...

Just wondered if anyone had an input or would just like to have a discussion about the merits of the different options around what would be the best bang for buck with future proofing in mind for under £200 for mobo/cpu.

Thanks.

Would definately be an improvement however if u went with the new phenoms and needed a new motherbaord. I would go ahead and buy a Intel instead. Not the most bang for your buck but atleast it will give you ability to go ivy bridge or get a cheap sandy bridge that will perform better than a phenom.

Microcenter is selling thei i5-2500k for $160 same price as a AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE

If i was in your position I would just phase out my rig and just wait till ivy or the next gen stuff comes out. And do a whole new rig build. Just the CPU RAM and Mobo.
