If you are going to be writing essays and documents on it, DO NOT make the same mistake I did and go for the tiny keyboard. It may seem that you can get used to it, you won't, and you will feel like an idiot when everyone tells you 'I told you so'

It's been some time since I saw a laptop drop below $350 without any discount/promo codes, right now, they are around $370 at the cheapest.
I just bought my mom an HP 630 but that one is $460 so I might guess its out of your price range.
anyways, when I set it up, it was very responsive, as usual, loads of crapware, but you can get rid of that with a format. Win7 told me it had around 9 hours of battery left on idle, so I guess that would be enough for you?
light, and generally good looking.
I might suggest going for AMDs APU line of CPUs, they seem very good for just casual laptop gaming, and are more than enough for almost any task a college kid can throw at them. but to get a decent one, you will have to go over $500, so out of price range.

This one($400) or
That one($430) are good choices for low end APUs, I would trust lenovo more than Asus though. The netbook I have is a lenovo IdeaPad s20-2 and its good and all, slow for laptop, but fast for netbook. BUT that tiny keyboard is frustrating!
oh and the battery lasts me over 10 hours browsing the net with CPU underclock and screen at the dimmest. I guess it would last about 8 on normal CPU speed with semi bright backlight

Thanks, but 15.6" is far to large, I've used my friends 11" acer and it worked fine keyboard wise for me. I have no issue with small keyboards. And those prices are far more than what I am going to spend on a netbook, I'd rather get a 14" laptop with a i5 for ~$500.

I only want a small netbook with a lot of battery life. wink.gif

I have something very similar and it gets me through. I am an engineering major so I do not have to type to much. Acer has some really good ones also <350 you could look at. Acer has some in your price range with 4GB RAM. The small keyboard is not a really big deal for me either. My Acer has average 11--13 hours battery life. The second ASUS I posted has around 13 hours also. I want to say Costco had an Acer notebook with a promotion code for 250$ a while ago may still have it.

I believe that they had the promotion coupon on the site and you had to pick it up in store. Not really sure if it worked on line it was $100 off Acer netbooks, and no idea if they still have it. confused.gif

Good news, bad news: Found some dual-core netbooks under $300, they're all Gateway or HP!

$280 for this Gateway 32nm Atom dual-core (Cedar-Trail). Standard Gateway disclaimer - sell it before the warranty expires, no worries biggrin.gif http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+10.1%22+Netbook+-+1GB+Memory+-+250GB+Hard+Drive+-+River+Black/4684196.p?id=1218508071683&skuId=4684196

$290 for this one, Atom N570 (last-gen, graphics are good for 720p and maybe some 1080p). The real sell-point - it has a backlit keyboard! Now that's fancy. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+10.1%26%2334%3B+Netbook+-+1GB+Memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Mystery+Purple/4873098.p?id=1218560723652&skuId=4873098

$300 Cedar Trail HP. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+10.1%22+Mini+Netbook+-+1GB+Memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Charcoal+Gray/4760514.p?id=1218523200884&skuId=4760514

My choice would be between the Gateway w/ backlit KB, or the HP. I personally would get the Gateway, if for nothing else to be a snob about having a backlit keyboard on my dual-core netbook.

*Edit: The 11" option of course would be the Acer AO722, with C-50 or C-60, but they're around $330 new currently. Maybe $220-250 used. I had one for a couple months, really nice netbook and it gets about 6.5 hours of battery for internet/office use, at about 30% brightness. Overall I'd recommend. The "OCD" cons are, super-glossy lid (you'll probably want to wipe it down at least once or twice a week), and the lid has a wave ripple pattern embossed into it. The clicker is a rocker, so the sweet spot is the ~ outer 1/3 of either end (if you hit what would traditionally be just inside the inner half of the clicker, it'll be hard but it'll click). Touchpad and keyboard are great though, even mine with Elantech TP, just as good as Symantec IMO. Screen is great, glossy but very nice especially for a netbook. /mini review
