the idea of raid is integration of multiple hard drives.

the different levels of raid are different types of integration.

the ones you will hear the most are 0, 1, and 10.

0 is striping, where you basically divide the information in half/thirds/whatever and write it to two or more drives simultaneously (theoretically doubling/tripling/etc your read/write speeds, although it doesn't scale nearly that well). if one drive crashes, all the information in the array is lost (because you are missing 1/2 or 1/3 or less of the data)

1 is mirroring, where you write the same info to both disks. this ensure security. if one drive crashes, you've got everything on a second.

10 is just a combination of the two. basically, you have a mirror followed by a stripe to allow for both security and speed.

other levels are more complex, but better for larger arrays. read the above links provided by other members. all good info.
