Need help with future upgrades

Thread Starter
Hello all!

So I'm new to the site, but have researched building computers heavily for the past 4 or 5 months. I finally built my first computer and I enjoyed it immensely. So hear is what I was wondering:
I plan on upgrading my processor for sure. By the time I want to, Ivy Bridge will be out and it'll probably be what I would want. Assuming I pick one out with a LGA 1155 slot, what would I have to do to have it run on my mobo? Would it be just like installing the cpu I currently have or would I need to upgrade the BIOS or something along those line. Also, I'm seeing that the new GPUs coming out will be utilizing PCI-e 3.0 slots, which I don't have. What kind of problems will I run in to, if any?

Thanks guys! biggrin.gif

Your motherboard might support Ivy Bridge with a BIOS update by then... If not, buy a new mobo by then. thumb.gif

You'd probably just have to update the BIOS. Looking for Ivy-ready boards isn't too tough, considering most companies outright state "Ivy-Bridge Ready" or whatever.

Ivy Bridge release got pushed back, just so you know. And as for PCIe 3.0, I don't even think Kepler cards will be able to push the limits of 2.0.

Do you mean that as in I won't be able to use the new Kepler cards or that I'll be fine? Something I found interesting though is that my board says I actually have PCI-e 3.0 slots, but Gigabyte's website says I have 2.0

3.0 cards (like Kepler) will be backwards-compatible with 2.0, I'm just saying that it's not worth worrying about 3.0 because even Kepler cards won't be able to max out the bandwith of PCIe 2.0.

And as for the discrepency, it may be because your motherboard doesn't technically support 3.0 yet (not until the BIOS and Ivy Bridge chips come out perhaps).
