6870x2 or 460 2Win or 6970?

Thread Starter
I am 60% of the way through the parts needed for a beastly MITX build and still need to decide on a gpu. I thought i had decided to pull the trigger on a 6970 when my tax return comes in.

however, while browsing amazon, i stumbled upon the 6870x2 for $350...remembering that evga had done something similar, i searched and found the 460 2win for the same price.

At some point soon, i will be forced to make a decision on this. I figured you guys would be happy to assist me =p

also, feel free to make recommendations for alternatives, keeping in mind the price range i'm looking in (350ish) and the fact that i will only have 1 pcie slot and two expansion slots on the case.

well out of those 2 choices you searched up,

iirc the 6870x2 smashes the 4602win. so....

but imho with new nvidia cards coming out around the corner, perhaps play the waiting game?

if not, you can get the 6870x2 if u really want to, but i'd recommend a single chip solution?

+1, 6xx series around the corner, and some quite decent single chip 5xx cards out there.
I usually advise against the 4xx series.

can't play the waiting game another 2 months just to be disappointed by high prices from nvidia AND amd. what single chip solution would you recommend? the only two in my price range are 6970 and 570, but the x2 and 2win blow those out of the water.

In pure numbers and static benching - yes.
In actual gameplay, troubleshooting and overclocking, the 570 will be at least equally decent.

6970 IMO. In the long run, 6870 x2 or 2win won't be a great option with their 1gb vRam buffer. 6970 now, another 6970 down the road for 200 or less for CFX.

Let me comment from another perspective:- thermal and acoustic

As this is a M-ITX build, the case will be a small one.  The interior space is not much, meaning airflow management is not easy.  For this reason, a reference HD6970 with traditional cooling design (ie front single centrifugal fan intake + total rear exhaust) is preferred over any other non traditional cooling design cards (such as the 6870x2 and 460 2Win). These latter cards dump a good portion of the hot exhaust inside the case and non-desirable recirculation is unavoidable. Higher temp and potentially more is likely.

So, IMHO, this perspective favors a reference HD6970.

(This does not necessarily mean the HD6970 is a very silent card though)

For example, http://www.amazon.com/HIS-Eyefinity-Mini-DisplayPort-Express-H697F2G2M/dp/B004FPYL9C/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329997295&sr=1-3

I would suggest a 6950/70. I have owned both, and they are very solid and selling for a good price lately with the release of 79xx. Personally I'd be looking at 1gb cards last here, as vram can be a problem depending on your res and games you play. Also imo, reference cooled is the way to go when using a sff case as airflow is at a premium.

Go for the 6970. Single stronger card > two weaker cards.

I preferred a highly-overclocked GTX 580 to my HD 6990 and GTX 590 for smooth performance. I am in fact moving back down to a GTX 480. 40 FPS on the 580 felt better than 60 FPS on the CFX/SLI cards.
