Question about temperature monitoring

Thread Starter
Hello!

I've got my rig running i7 2600k at 4.5GHz with a 45x CPU ratio. It's running stable at 1.375V but the temps are too high. My cooler is Scythe Mugen 3 PCGH and it's quite huge so I thought it should do the job.

But when I run prime95 cores 1-3 hit 70C in one minute while core #0 maxes out at a tolerable 65C temperature. I think the cores 1-3 might get to 75C if I leave the benchmark on, but I don't want to do that until I'm sure it's safe. At idle speeds the core #0 stays at 35C while other cores get about 42C.

Why do some of the cores generate much more heat than core #0? Is my cooler good enough for my overclock or is there something wrong with the cooler installation?

Load Line Calibration = OFF
Internal PLL Overvoltage = OFF
System Power Supply = 130%
Phase Control = Extreme

All system sepcs below. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I had accidentally installed the 2nd cooler wrong way around so the two fans were blowing in opposite directions... Fixed it and it's now about 3C cooler but still core 1-3 are 10C hotter than core #0. They seem to peak at 72C but I guess I can live with that since in daily usage the cores never run at a constant 100%. Core #0 peaks at 64C

I also checked the TIM on the cooler and decided to remove some of it since there seemed to be more than enough of it. Suggestions for lowering the temps via BIOS settings are still welcome!

Based on the spreadsheet here, it looks like your temps are normal and variation between the cores temperatures is normal. It seems a bit odd that it's just 1 core in your situation and that it's 10C colder than the others but I don't really know what to tell you about that.

You said you removed some of the TIM? Did you reapply it or just take the cooler off, scrape some TIM off, and put the cooler back on?

While Large differences of temperatures between cores aren't uncommon. I would remount,

1.Clean both the cpu and the Mugen with 91+% alcohol with a lint free cloth
2.Put a pea sized drop of TIM in the middle of the cpu
3.Then when mounting try to alternate when screwing down the mounting plate from corner to corner.

I have about a 7-8c difference between core 1 to core 2 so its not really an issue

IMO 1.375 is kinda high for a 4.5...

Set LLC to medium and put the Offset to +0.015 see if that works if not Increase the offset voltage one tick at a time until you are stable you should be sub 1.35v....

I just scraped some off and put the cooler back on. I guess that's stupid but I thought it wouldn't be necessary hadn't really done burn-in since I applied the TIM only yesterday. I guess I should clean it properly like KuuFA advicved. Just have to buy some liquid for that. Will some sort of thinner work or what should I look for?

I just followed the old SandyBridge OC tutorial on this forum which adviced to have 1.375 at 4.5GHz. I'll try getting the voltage below 1.35 now then. Thank you!

I tried setting LLC to medium with +0.15 but the temps went immediately over 70C after only few seconds of prime95. I then disabled LLC and I'm now testing it with +0.25 but it's still not stable. The temps already reach 70C with this voltage (CPU-Z saying it peaks at 1.336). It's not stable yet. It's weird that the temps are almost the same as they are with 1.375...

I've overclocked only AMD processor previously so I don't understand why the voltage drops on heavy use. My brain says it should increase.

I have all of my CPU related bios settings here if someone can see if there's something very wrong there.

IIRC, you should always clean it off and reapply the TIM, otherwise air gets between there and air doesn't conduct heat nearly as well as TIM does which will cause higher temperatures.

Also, bump up Load Line Calibration to Ultra High, and change the VRM to 350. Everything else looks fine in your settings.

Thanks for the tips smile.gif

I'll get the alcohol and clean the cooler properly tomorrow, that should lower the temperature a bit. For now I'll try out the best possible settings.

Btw I've always done TIM installation like this:

Insert TIM
Mount cooler
Unmount cooler
Check if TIM spread evenly
Mount cooler again

Is this proper installation method or should I skip the check to avoid air getting in between? And maybe always add enough TIM that at least it should cover the entire area when the cooler is applied?

It would be pointless to clean and then reapply TIM if you're just going to take the cooler off and put it back on again. I would just skip the checking entirely.

I just use the method of putting a small pea sized dot in the center of the CPU and then mount the cooler and let pressure do the work of spreading it. There's a bunch of other methods out there though and I don't really know which works the best.
