Need help choosing some new cans

Thread Starter
So once again I find myself asking for the help of OCN's resident audiophiles. I'm in need of a new pair of headphones, since my last pair (HD428) met an unfortunate end. I've got some requirements for the cans and I'll list them below, if there's anything else I need to add, just let me know.

Budget: ~$100 shipped
Type: Over Ear/Closed (This is not a requirement, just my preference.)
Use: Gaming (RPG/FPS/MMO), Ventrilo, Music
They also can't require an amp.

My computer has an X-Fi titanium sound card but I'll also be using them on my HTC Rezound (minus Beats integration). In addition, all the music I listen to is FLAC, WMA Lossless or .MP3 320Kbps.

As for type of music, I'll just list some of the bands I listen to.

A Perfect Cirlce
Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed
Dream Theater
Linkin Park (Older stuff mostly)
Muse
The Offspring
Panic! At The Disco
Slipknot
Stone Sour
System of a Down

(Again, just a random sampling of bands.)

So far I was eye-balling a pair of Audio-Technica ATH AD700s, but I'm not sure if they would work well for that I'm doing.

Assuming it's not possible to find a pair of headphones that would fit all of that nicely, I would prioritize how music sounds over how games sound. I also have no brand preference. Thanks in advance.

I am going to point you to a Buyer's Guide on Head-Fi.org, they helped me pick up my last set of cans.

http://www.head-fi.org/a/headphone-buying-guide

Its a simple price / headphone name / small description that you can further research yourself. Best advice I could give you is to try some out ^.^ which is not always possible frown.gif

The Audio Technica are usually recommended for that price range, however, there have been some other brands that are beating it now in terms of quality and price. I always like to know all my options before buying though. Hope it helps!

I would suggest the AD700's as you listed.

Since you aren't listening to hip hop/bass heavy music, and you like to game, they will be a great choice for you thumb.gif

I also hear that they're extremely comfortable

Refer to this thread for more suggestions: http://www.overclock.net/t/1014902/ocns-most-recommended-audio-products
