After market CPU cooler installation help.

Thread Starter
I have a Xigmatek Gaia CPU cooler, now this is my first atempt on installing a aftermarket heatsink. I know how to remove the old paste so I have heard to just put a grain of rice of paste on the CPU and that's all you don't have to spread from what I read on other websites. (the one about leaveing the paste on the cpu was from my friend.) So is this the way to go when installing the paste? Also anytips I should know when installing the cooler?

You do not have to level it, just fasten the cooler as the instructions state the paste will spread by its self.

Make sure you orient the backplate properly and just put two vertical lines of paste on the cooler and it should spread out evenly.
Yep, don't need to spread and a grain of rice sized dot is good for most coolers. However, with the gaia, you might want to use two <1/4" lines instead. I only say this because the heatpipes make for a non-perfectly smooth surface.

Whatever method you choose, I would highly suggest you do two mounts. After you install it the first time take it off and see if you got a good, full coverage spread. If not, adjust the amount of TIM and try again. thumb.gif

Oh, this is perfect!! Take a look

There are a hundred ways to apply thermal paste. Use this link and click a product (if you dont have Arctic Silver, then just pick any one) and follow the instructions.

Agreed. OP, look at that guide. The method on the bottom of the page is the best for HDT coolers like the Gaia. The lines should each be half the length of your CPU for best result. I've owned HDT coolers (Vendetta 2 and Hyper 212+) so I kinda know this stuff.

HDT heatsink?
Thread Starter
Alright, nice. I just got home and looked at the back side of my case and saw that I had easy access to the backplate, so I don't have to remove the mobo from my case. Maybe just few a few cords just for extra room. Awesome.
