Need a Water Cooling Setup for 2500K and 7970

Thread Starter
I need a water cooling setup that would work for a fairly high overclocked i5 2500K (plan on getting a 3770k in April) and a Reference MSI 7970. I have never built or even used a water cooling setup, but I think now is the time. If you guys can list the parts I would need. Thanks. My case is a HAF X 942.

Updating first post for new people to this thread.

So this is my updated list of parts:
XSPC Rasa 750 RX360 $190
EK Radeon 7970 Block $115
EK Radeon HD 7970 Backplate $30
3x Gentle Typhoon $48
10ft. XSPC Blue High Flex PVC Tubing $25
2x Reusable 5/8" Hose Clamp $4
2x Bitspower Matte Black G1/4" Barb Fitting - 1/2" ID $7
Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal Compound $12

Am I missing anything? Does everything look compatible?

I would grab a RASA kit just because you are new and it's a very noob friendly kit plus the price is pretty good too...(I got a rasa kit about 2 months ago and its awesome i was a noob to WC as well).
I would start out with a kit and in the future venture out with an all out custom..... IMO.

Can that work with a 7970, or will I need something separate. I would like if at all possible to get everything on the same loop.

I plan on going the same route. I have the rasa rx360 kit with a 2500k. First ever watercooling as well. I've got a 7970 too but still getting a feel for this watercooling business before I add the gpu. But, if you read up on the rasa owners thread, lots of people have the gpu in the loop too. So I think it would be safe to do it with a rx360 kit, not sure if a 240 kit could do it though. I am sure someone with more knowledge will give you a straight forward answer though.

Edit: of course you would have to purchase the gpu block separately from the main kit as it does not come with one

Something like the RX360 kit would fit your needs very well. Everything you need is included in the package, and it's all respectable parts. The only things you'll need to add is distilled water and I'd recommend a kill coil.
The pump/res isn't anything special but it will be fine for your needs.
If you opt to dive right in and get your 7970 wet too then you'll need an additional block and a couple of fittings for it. EK make some great waterblocks so they'll definitely be worth looking at for your GPU.

You might want to upgrade the fans that come with the kit, though it isn't crucial.
Yate Loon and Gentle Typhoons are tops for static pressure, which is the figure you want to be looking at for radiator fans as opposed to CFM.
Go for the highest speed fans you can tolerate, AP15 (1850rpm) or the high speed Yate Loon (2200rpm). You might want a fan controller for convenience. Take a look at Lamptron thumb.gif
The Gentle Typhoons are the best fans I've ever owned, very solid construction, very quiet. The Yate Loons shift the same sort of quantity of air and are significantly cheaper but they're lower build quality.

I use SpecialTech in the UK, but as your in the US you'll probably want something a bit more local.
Here's the stuff from FrozenCPU
RX360 + Free kill coil
You can grab distilled water at the supermarket.
EK 7970 block There are a couple of variations, they all perform the same just choose if you like the clear (plexi) top or the acetal. Go to coolingconfigurator.com to check if that's the right block for your specific card.
Gentle Typhoon(out of stock at FrozenCPU)
High Speed Yate Loon
Cheaper fan controller
Fancier fan controller
You might want to replace the tubing that comes with the kit, take your pick of colouring. 7/16" ID fits snuggly over the barbs included in the Rasa kit. XSPC seems pretty good, I've never had a problem and haven't heard of any issues with it. Some of the primochill tubing has had issues lately.
You might want a couple of hoseclamps to go with the additional fittings on the gpu.
You can add any angled fittings you need to make the loop tidier.

You'll also want some thermal paste. I use MX-4 as I like the consistency. The decent ones are all around the same performance.

So my list is:
XSPC Rasa 750 RX360 $190
EK Radeon 7970 Block $115
EK Radeon HD 7970 Backplate $30
3x Gentle Typhoon $48
How many feet of XSPC Blue High Flex PVC Tubing? And this tubing is the same size as the EK Block correct? I didn't see any specs listed. $2.50 Per Foot.
2x Reusable 5/8" Hose Clamp $4
Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal Compound $12

Does it look like I got everything I need? Any suggestions? Also where would I go about mounting the reservoir and radiator on my HAF 942?

I'd get two meters, it's nice to have have some leeway, so either 6 or 7 feet.
There are only stop fittings included with the block so you'll need two additional fittings for it. These will be almost identical to ones included with the kit. Or you could go for black.

You can mount the res/pump in a couple of the 5.25" bays. As for the radiator it's most likely you can mount it internally at the top. There's a nice build loghere. Just measure to check it will fit with your RAM.
