Building a desk for ~$70

333Thought someone might be interested in seeing this here.

My girlfriend has this ikea corner desk with the rounded face which is fine. Thats where my desktop is currently, but i want more workspace. I know i could grab some ikea junk, but why? Besides this stuff is fun and between myself and my dad I've got all the tools i need.

So without further ado here is my quick and dirty, loose measurements, mostly to scale Google sketchup.

Let me know if this link works. First time using both sketchup and rapidshare. Yes I'm a Noob.

Basic idea is 1 sheet of 4x8 3/4" plywood, 1 leg, 1 leg coupler, a couple of 2x4x8's, and some trim. I'm not really accounting for paint, and screws, and glue since I have that laying around.

Links to planned purchases for this thing:

3/4 x 4 x 8 Birch Plywood

2 x 4 x 92-1/4 Green Douglas-Fir Stud

Waddell 5" Heavy Duty Top Plate

Waddell 28"L x 2.3"Dia. Ash Parsons Traditional Wood Table Leg

1 x 2 x 8 Premium Furring Strip

hey! I've done that! and I waste a lot of time on sketchup just doing things I'll never actually build.
a long time ago, before I moved to St Louis, I built 2 of my desks, one was a AIO tv/computer/gaming desk which closed and had a laptop MB built into it, and the other was more like shelves and corner desk thing!

wow, memories! dude! if you tell me your needs and dimensions, I would GLADLY design an AWESOME desk! based off plywood and basic home depot wood tongue.gif
I only wish MY dad would have helped me u.u

EDIT: few images of my rough prototype tongue.gif

Everything looks pretty good. Be prepared, though, that the quality of the hardwood ply at Home Depot and Lowes isn't always the best. It sometimes has voids in the layers that you don't find until you start cutting. Might be better to find a shop or lumber yard near you that specialize in hardwood. I found one not too far from me that has much better quality plywood for very similar prices.

For the leg, why not save some additional money and make it yourself out of a 2x4 or 2 of them joined together? It's not a huge savings, but might help out.

I did consider using a lumber yard instead of home depot, thanks to your post I'm actually looking into it now thumb.gif
For the leg i did look into using a doubled up 2x4 and really the savings didnt wow me enough that it was worth it.

I may be spending a few bucks more to put some doors on the shelf area, we'll see what the girlfriend says once i get this thing put together.

I like the AIO, with some finishing touches it'd look real nice. I dunno if you downloaded the google sketchup file but here is another updated one, with the whole room laid most, close to scale.

https://rapidshare.com/files/1749543264/TableStage3WithRoom.skp

Again measurements in sketchup are loose, (my dad is an engineer, so really my measurements are rough by his standards), im using 48"x96" for the sheet of ply for example to make the numbers easier to work with instead of say the true finished dimensions, but you get the idea. Basically i have 62" from the right wall to meet up with the existing desk (longer side of the L) and the short side i am using the sheet of plywood to set my 4' from the corner dimension, which seems to work nicely in the room. Directly above the long face of the desk is a window so i would rather not have anything there as you'll see in the sketchup. The whole room including the closet is plugged in there.

I plan on trimming this thing out with something, my dad says he has some oak flooring i can use, so we'll see, and it will be painted black/brown to emulate (hopefully match) the ikea desk.
