Crossfire - is it possible to set separate custom fan profiles?

Thread Starter
I just bought a 6950 Toxic for my first crossfire setup, to pair with my existing 6950 Dirt 3 edition. When under load, the Toxic runs quite hot for my tastes (85-90C when running Furmark).

The default fan configuration on the Toxic only runs the fan up to 40%, while the Dirt 3 will run up to 100%. I would like to create a custom fan profile for the Toxic, while leaving the other one at automatic. I am not currently looking to overclock the cards. I want to run them at stock clocks and voltages until I get a feel for how they behave. After some experimenting, this is what I have observed so far:
  • CCC will let me set a single speed for each individual card, but not a full profile. I don't need it spinning like a vacuum cleaner when idle.
  • Afterburner will fully synchronize the cards no matter what I do. It will not allow me to maintain individual clocks, voltages, or fan speeds.
  • Trixx allows me to do what I want, but it will not save this between restarts. I'd rather not have to create the fan profile each time.

Is there a solution that will allow me to do what I want and just set it once?

Is the toxic the bottom card? If it's still running that hot, try re-seating the cooler.
Is there anything else in the system blocking airflow to the cards? Do you have enough ventilation for the system?

At first I had the Toxic on top because I wanted it to be the main card (mobo will only do top card as main). However, when it rose to 90+C, while the Dirt3 was just at 75C, I realized that the Toxic was pulling in all the hot air from the other card. When I switched their positions, its temp dropped quite a bit. There is nothing blocking airflow and open case gives me similar results.

I don't think high-80s is so unusual, considering that the HardOCP review had this card go up to 87C at stock settings. They too noted that the card required a custom fan profile to run at more comfortable temps.

I am running Furmark for the past 15 minutes and both cards are sitting at 88C, with Dirt3 fan at 100% and Toxic just under 50% (stock). Therefore, I was mistaken about the 40%, but it does seem that it tries not to exceed that number until temps hit 85C. If I manually adjust the fan to 55%, both cards will drop down to around 80C.

Furmark is more demanding than any game, and after 15 minutes you've completely stressed the cards. If they're under 90c after that, you should be fine while playing just about any game for an extended period of time. I don't know how you could save the settings for two different fan profiles though. You could just sync the fan speeds in MSI afterburner, but the reference card will be pretty loud.

Yeah, syncing the fans in MSI Afterburner was loud not just at load but at idle, whereas on stock settings I could barely hear them. It also clocked both cards to the clocks of whichever one I set as my main, while setting both to the higher card's voltage, regardless of which card's clocks are used. Needless to say, it was not doing what I wanted it to.

Also, this is not just in Furmark. I want to run BOINC on my system and with that the Toxic immediately shoots up to 87C, while Dirt 3 is at 78C.

Did you try unchecking "Synchronise settings for similar graphics processors" in afterburner?

I did uncheck the option to synchronize settings but it still synchronized them for some reason. I tripled-checked, restarted, reset the program, and no matter what I did it still synchronized them to whatever I had set as the main card.
