A buddy of mine got into the beta and I poked at Diablo 3 a little bit...
Is it pretty? Yes. It is prettier than its predecessor.
Does it feel somewhat like the original? Yep. There is a sense of oversimplification though.
Is there anything that feels all that new here? No, not really. Kill things. Get stuff.
The gear selling and so forth just does not excite me terribly. I have a limited amount of time and I'm not inclined to think that farming for loot is a worthwhile way to spend my time. I may pick it up if I spot it on sale at some point in the future. Regardless, Diablo 3 is not falling into the "buy now" category.
As for Acti-Blizzard not caring about their user base, I suspect that it's more a feeling of mild disdain really. I play a lot of SC2 with friends and sometimes against the Internet. While I'm pretty horrible at the game, there are things (not related to balance) that they have opted to ignore. Such as:
A party can consist of a maximum of 6 people. When I play with friends and there are eight of us, we have to manually invite two players each game. It's not a huge deal, but it is also an equal part stupid since there are 4v4 custom maps that come with the game right out of the box.
Voip system is abysmal. People just use Skype, ventrillo, cans with string instead of the built in audio client. Why even include it if people simply work around the current non-functional system? Or better yet, license the technology from a competent company and get on with life.
Matchmaking / Ladder abuse: While Blizzard recently provided some insight to their ladder system, it's not hard to maintain a 'smurf' account and not be punished in the lower leagues. They are not even hard to spot. At my rank, seeing the words "expanding search" is code for "you are going to get owned...right through your pants" < sigh >
The side effect: Community; SC2, WoW, and I suspect Diablo 3 will primarily target the least common denominator audience. While there will be good people and very likely good mods at some unseeable future point. It also will include a large number of generally annoying people. You know, those 'lovely' people who respond with inflammatory remarks at the start of a game, the griefers, the jackasses who spend the whole game bumbling around and then say that YOU should learn how to play. < facepalm >
I'm sure some of you are aware that there was a Diablo 1 console release for the Playstation. There was also the somewhat pricey Starcraft 64. So it's not like Blizzard has never ported their work to consoles in the past.
Anyway, Blizzard will do what they please. They usually do and the masses will love it. Kinda like Square-Enix (FF 13 anyone?)
Hex.
[ Needs to bust out Torchlight while I wait for the release of Guild Wars 2 ; which I am truly excited about the prospect of playing... ]
