EVGA GTX 580 SC running at 98*C!!! Somebody bring a fire hose!

Sooo i just got this EVGA GTX 580 SC 6 days ago, it started out by idling at 65*C which i thought was awfully high. Then it would go to 93*C under load (playing dragon age origins on max.) So i called EVGA and the guy says my temps are fine, they are on the higher end of normal. He suggested i replace the thermal paste. I asked what kind and he suggested arctic silver 5, so i had some and used this to replace the thermal paste. The idle finally went down to 43ish. 22*C?!?! that seemed crazy so i was really stoked to see how this would turn out with full load.....it HAD to be lower....right?

Well now full load temp is 98*C and I'm a bit freaked out since this seems terribly high. I am running a Corsair 600T SE case with the two big 200 mm fans that seems to do quite well and replaced the rear fan with a xigmatek LED one. seems to move a lot of air from what i can feel. The CPU stays right at 24*C and its over clocked to 4.3 GHz so airflow seems good.

I got the card at micro center and they allow a switch to any card (or the same as well) for 30 days so should i be taking advantage of this or will my card be fine? My biggest issue is i was planning on over clocking my 580, but i dunno if its even possible with those temps being as high as they are.

What are you using to check the TEMP? GTX580 cant go above 97C. If it does it will slow down.

1. Alt + 0176 = °

2. I agree with the rep, the temps on that are on the higher end of normal, yes, they do scale themselves down when they get hot, but pushing these things get hot, my watercooled 580 gets up to 65°c when playing some higher demanding games. ( ive seen some 480s run at 100°+ )

3. Download Evga precision, and you can adjust your fan speed, and even clock it back down to stock which may/may not help, (as they are barely above stock speeds ) and make sure your card has plenty of breathing space to get as much fresh air as it can, they aslo make pci slot fans that may help you out as well. obviously, i'm assuming you reseated everything properly when you re-did the thermal paste.

4. return / exchange it.

But i must say, i do find it hard to believe your temps are accurate at idle, your GPU is running 20° hotter than your CPU... ive never seen a difference that great while at idle.

yepp Fan was all the way up. Its the only card in there and has lots of room, even removed some of the drive cages for more airflow. Yea i did the paste right, but even before it was getting really hot as well. So my thoughts are if its getting to the point of scaling down....whats the point of the cards power? At this price it should not have those issue i would think. I understand power and heat, but almost 100*C? EVGA said 100* is a definite RMA so I'm only 1-2* from that point, i would imagine in time this card will get even warmer.

Either your case has really horrific airflow, or something is not right with the heatsink.

I used to have a GTX 470 overclocked to 850 MHz @ 1.1V on the reference cooler and even that only hit about 90C at load (and that was a GF100 card, which ran much hotter than GF110).

I suggest RMAing it.

I think ill take it back to Microcenter and get another one. Do all EVGA's run hot? Should i go with a diff brand or even a different card (like a 7970?)
