I have a desktop at home that I'm trying to connect to with my laptop. I was thinking about just using Remote Desktop Connection because it's built in, but I haven't been able to get it to work. So I'm looking either for a good alternative or some help getting RDC working.
Here's what I need to be able to do:
-File management. Moving folders and files, including ones needing administrator access.
-Edit text files, including ones that need administrator access, and creating new ones.
-Manage downloads. I need to be able to use a web browser to start and manage downloads.
-Execute programs. I need to be able to install programs and run executables.
*Remote startup/shutdown, restarting, and waking from sleep are nice pluses not but necessary.
The computer I'm connecting to is running Windows XP Professional 32 SP3. My laptop runs Windows 7 Professional 64, so the problem is that RDC doesn't work directly from Windows 7 to Windows XP. I tried using the built in Windows XP mode vm, but I just get a message that this computer could not connect to the remote computer. That's all I get, no other information. I'm pointing it at a port other than the default one, because there's only 1 port forwarded to the remote computer on my home router.
Is it possible to get RDC to run in a vm from a win7 pc to winxp pc? If so, what do I need to do? Is there a way to go directly from win7 to winxp?
If there are easier/better alternatives to RDC, I'm open to recommendations. I'm pretty new to the whole remote connection thing.

Though you could TV into a computer on the same LAN and then wake via LAN...
