Remote Desktop Connection (or something similar)

Thread Starter
I have a desktop at home that I'm trying to connect to with my laptop. I was thinking about just using Remote Desktop Connection because it's built in, but I haven't been able to get it to work. So I'm looking either for a good alternative or some help getting RDC working.

Here's what I need to be able to do:
-File management. Moving folders and files, including ones needing administrator access.
-Edit text files, including ones that need administrator access, and creating new ones.
-Manage downloads. I need to be able to use a web browser to start and manage downloads.
-Execute programs. I need to be able to install programs and run executables.
*Remote startup/shutdown, restarting, and waking from sleep are nice pluses not but necessary.

The computer I'm connecting to is running Windows XP Professional 32 SP3. My laptop runs Windows 7 Professional 64, so the problem is that RDC doesn't work directly from Windows 7 to Windows XP. I tried using the built in Windows XP mode vm, but I just get a message that this computer could not connect to the remote computer. That's all I get, no other information. I'm pointing it at a port other than the default one, because there's only 1 port forwarded to the remote computer on my home router.

Is it possible to get RDC to run in a vm from a win7 pc to winxp pc? If so, what do I need to do? Is there a way to go directly from win7 to winxp?

If there are easier/better alternatives to RDC, I'm open to recommendations. I'm pretty new to the whole remote connection thing.

When you use RDC, did you have port forwarding set up on your router?

I do, but not the default RDC port. I have a different port forwarded to it so I just pointed it at that. That should be fine shouldn't it?

I learned this the hard way but I dont believe you can do it. Before I sold my laptop I stayed up 2 straight nights (no breaks) trying to figure it out... never got it to work.

EDIT: If Sean Webster ever comes back online then ask him about it.

Using Teamviewer is the easiest solution.
Set up software on both computers (and register to the same account).
This way, you can connect to either of them via weblogin. They're protected very well, and it's a very intuitive and easy to use program.

Free for personal use, accessible via Android also. Highly recommended

You can't turn it on from an off position though... frown.gif Though you could TV into a computer on the same LAN and then wake via LAN...

Good suggestions everyone, thanks. I'm going to check out teamviewer, and there's a free version of logmein that I've been using with my phone so I'm going to try that as well.

And I already have dropbox, and a significant amount of storage from referrals on a student account. So that was the plan all along thumb.gif

Oh and thanks for the tip about it not running period. I'll still ask Sean if he's here.

I also use LogMeIn Hamachi to connect with my laptop when I'm in the office and it works well.

I've never had problems using my Windows 7 desktop to RDC to my XP Pro media server on the LAN though.

I had RDC working correctly on my old p4 with xp sp3 working just fine... forwarded the ports needed, and set a static route to the target machine. If you have QoS turned on, you may need to disable it. Other than that the only thing I ran into that infuriated me was that RDC requires that taget machine have a password on login.
