[TF] RapidShare Slows Download Speeds To Drive Away Pirates

During the last week, users who rely on RapidShare’s free service have been complaining of reduced download speeds. Several theories have been circulating, mainly focusing on the file-hoster trying to drive users to take up premium accounts. But according to RapidShare the reason is simple – to drive pirates away from their service. Fast download speeds are still available for free, but they come at a different kind of cost.

“RapidShare has been faced with a severe increase in free user traffic and unfortunately also in the amount of abuse of our service ever since, suggesting that quite a few copyright infringers have chosen RapidShare as their new hoster of choice for their illegal activities,” the company explained.

“We have thus decided to take a painful yet effective step: to reduce the download speed for free users. We are confident that this will make RapidShare very unpopular amongst pirates and thus drive the abusive traffic away.”

RapidShare says that there is a direct link between free users of file-hosting services and copyright infringement. Those who like to pirate prefer not to pay, the company believes, not least because they want to avoid connecting their personal payment details to a copyright-infringing cyberlocker account.

It's true though, websites like MU that didn't have wait times after downloading a file or gimped speeds are popular for illegally hosted content.

This argument actually has a lot of merit. It appears that they are being very smart about this.

It's not true at all. With MU out of the picture they know "pirates" will be more than willing to pay for rapidshare premium accounts to pirate content. There is absolutely no basis to say people who pirate prefer not to pay, that's not consistent with how warez has worked for the past 10 years or so.

If RS is so worried about piracy tell me why they didn't cap their rates in the first place. For that matter tell me why they increased their free user speeds in the first place only a couple months ago before MU was shut down.

RS capped user download speed to 30 KB/s for free users and no resume prior to this.

In theory, it should drive away pirates. But it will also drive up paid service for Rapidshare. So, from a legal standpoint they appear to be trying to push away those that upload/download copyrighted material, but it certainly does not hurt if these actions boost their revenue.

Awhile ago, yes, they had capped speeds. However, a few months ago they uncapped their download speeds for free users (used to get 1.2MB/s when they uncapped).

..and then capped them again just a few weeks ago. Now, we have this.

Piracy is the most overblown BS I've ever seen. How about the gaming/movie/music industries focus on QUALITY instead of lost sales. Stop pushing out crap and people will buy more.
