Newbie Help X2 4200 Temps and OC

Thread Starter
Hello all, I just finished making my first computer, and this is my first AMD box. I have a X2 4200+, 939Dual-SataII, 2 GB ram, 2 HD (1 SATA and 1 ATA), 2 DVD burners, and a X800 AIW XT. I am monitoring temperatures, and using everest I am getting from 37 degrees idle to 56 degrees under load. Should I be worried, and should I try to overclock it at these high temperatures. I have a stock cooler on mine. Please help, and thanks in advance.

at those temps, i would double check your temps with another prog, make sure your case isnt too hot (proper intake and exhaust), and would replace that stock cooler asap...

please fill in your specs and I would be happy to help you with the little x2 OC knowledge I have gathered from oc'ing my x2 4400

oh, and NO, don't overclock yet. If you just wanna see what your walls are, you should be fine, jsut don't stress test with load temps at 56 stock

I don't know, I just disabled 2 of my fans on my case, 2 intakes on the side of the case, that both blow in air over the CPU and GPU, thinking that may be part of the problem. I am doing a stress test to see how hot it is getting now. I have around 48 degrees now, 49 in one core, 57 in another core. so I do not know what to think.

Just reached 52 (is not going over 52 after 10 more minutes of stress test) (ran it for a total of 18 minutes, stayed at 52 for the last 10 minutes, tottered for 1/2 a second at the end at 53, but did not stay long) and also when I am doing a game where I got the 56 from a while back, my GPU was pushing 65-70 degrees

What part of "THAT'S WAY TOO HOT!" didn't you understand.

Disabling case fans is not the way to get cooler.

The total CFM ratings of the fans blowing air into the case should be about equal to the total CFM ratings of the fans blowing air oput of the case.

Download CPUBurn In to stress your CPU: http://users.bigpond.net.au/cpuburn/

If your temps rise rapidly (2-3 seconds to get to 50*c or so) with stress, you probably have bad heat transfer between the CPU cooler and the CPU. If the temp rise is slower 1-2 min to get to 50*c you probably have inadequate case cooling.

If the first, Remove and reinstall the cooler. clean off (remove) the AMD thermal pad with Isopropyl alcohol (70%+, and use coffee filters, they're lint free, not rags, q-tips, or paper towels) and apply a good thermal insulation material such as AS5 per these directions: http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2amdas5.html.

If the latter, rearrange your fans or add fans to control case ventilation.
You can find the CFM rating of your exixting fans by reading the manufacturer's nane and the model number on them and going to the fan manufacturere's website. The fan's specs will be there.

As for the GPU temps, those are OK, but will come down some with better case cooling,

I disabled 2 fans because I was not sure if they were going the right way (which I found out they were), the 50 degrees is based off going and running the test, it took 4 minutes to reach that high. I have a case that has 1 80 mm fan on the bottom for base air flow, a 80 going over the HD's, a 120 in the back blowing air out. The 2 I disabled were 1 over a CPU fan Duct (92mm) and a 80 over the GPU. The 2 fans I disabled did not seem to affect temperature at all so I am wondering if they are worth even enabling (both blow air in). I am at work now, but when I get to my room again I will try the program you suggested. I am not an idiot at this, Thank you very much, I only got rid of the extra fans that I was not sure what affect they were having. all my fans are Antec Tricools (my 120 Ball bearings are a little out of wack, I am getting that one replaced by antec), and CPU, intake and exaust are running at high, Drive, and GPU are running at medium.

Just ran it, after 5 minutes temp was only at 47.

Ok, just fixed it up a bit... reactivated the 2 fans, fixed duct fan position, running stess test. 32 degrees idle, 45 degrees after 12 minutes. 100% constant CPU usage with the test.
