audio technica ATH-A700 or A900?

Thread Starter
in my search for a good set of closed cans in the 150-200 range i came across the audio technica ath-a700s and a900s. looks like the A700s are pretty popular here. what are everyones opinions about the a900s? does the sound quality justify the price increase over the a700s?

looks like they require quite a bit of burn-in, but other than that i see somer pretty high opinions of the a900s around the web (head-fi/etc)

The A700s are a better bang for the buck than the 900s if you ask me.

You could also look into the Beyerdynamic DT770s thumb.gif

there's no big difference to justify the price increase over the A700's.
is this your first set of headphones?

thanks for the heads up. this is about my 4th set. i have slowly been working my way up the food chain. the last couple sets were low to mid range sennheisers (hd485/hd449) and figured it may be time to try a different manufacturer for some variety

For another variety entirely, you should consider an Ultrasone smile.gif It complements my Sennheiser HD600 quite well.

I have been using A700's for over 2 years and they are really, really good.

Really punchy yet clear sound. Work amazing with an amp.

Another vote for ultrasone, bought my pro 900 for dirt cheap used on amazon and they pack a punch.

i have the 700s and man are they awesome. positional sound is great and clarity in music is amazing compared to other sets ive tried. also i am only on my onboard sound so im sure with a sound card it would be even better.

I give my vote to Ultrasone. I got my Pro 550s for christmas and I love them, They're built well and sound great in gaming. After researching for a long time, I picked these because from what I read, they were the only headphones at that price range that had a combination of good sound staging and really deep bass. However, I will admit that I am no audiophile or expert on the subject.
