Don't run AA in games, never have. Should I bother GTX 570 sc to 7950/7970?

Thread Starter

Well, much as I hate to admit it, the numbers and results don't lie and im starting to think of jumping off the green boat after all these years.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5476/amd-radeon-7950-review/6

I built my below rig in early fall and was dead set on one step below Nvidia's top of the line, which was the 570 vs the 580 and at the time, were doing well head to head with the 6970/6950 series from AMD. I've always been partial to nvidia over the years, mostly cause my first custom build PC back in 2001 was the infamous Geforce 3. I also just prefer nvidia's drivers after owning a 9800 pro back in 2003, mostly cause nvidia was totally sucking with the 5700 ultra lineup at the time. ATi's drivers were just seemingly unstable and a real pain to figure out how to configure and adjust vs nvidias easier to understand interface. It also seems apparant from what I can tell that AMD still has issues with churning out quality drivers which results in a new driver every single freak week, while with my nvidia's over the years, I update driver maybe once every 1-2 months if needs be.

That being said, im seeing the benchmark results for the 7970/7950 vs the GTX 570 and 580 and its pretty shameful that AMD is kicking nvidia's butt pretty hard again. Even more so the fact that nvidia is still not planning on launching their Keplar chip until March, April or God knows when. Considering the performance boost I'm seeing from a 570 to a 7950, this is pretty unacceptable, even for an nvidia fanboy like me.

My question is, I"NEVER bothered with using AA in my games over the years. I"ve always found it to be highly overrated IMO. Jaggies have never bothered me in games, i'm too busy playing and enjoying to notice how "unsmooth" the freaking edges of a rock, rail or tree look like, it just don't too me. I'm running a Dell 24"  2412M at honestly at the resolution of 1600x1200 and beyond, jaggies are just not noticable to me, let alone at 1920x1200.

With that being said, think it be worthwhile to defect to the red AMD camp? I'm mostly playing Skyrim, SWTOR and BF3 at this time. I do run a 20'' Viewsonic monitor also but its not used for gaming obviously. I currently have a Antec Newpower 550w for my PSU that i'd like to stick with if it can power a 7950/7970.

Is it worth the extra performance boost despite not running AA or do AMD's driver still suck enough to the piont where its questionable to even bother running them vs nvidia unless your an AMD fanboy? Basically,  are current gen AMD card drivers stable and reliable or am I just asking for a faster but more unreliable road vs a slower but steady road with my nvidia GTX 570?

Hard to say whether its worth it or not but AMD drivers dont suck. For single cards theyre at least as good as nvidia, you wont have issues. For Crossfire it depends on who you talk to, I've had no issues but others have.

A 7950 can be overclocked to near-7970 levels, so you'd be looking at around 50% better performance (after OC) while using alot less power than a 570. If you could sell your 570 for a decent amount it'd be a pretty nice upgrade for $200ish.

stick with the 570. I personally hate AMD drivers and dont plan on ever going back. the 570 performs really well and there is not much of a point in jumping to a new card. If anything SLI your 570 setup.

the only reason why the 7xxx series by amd is beating nvidia atm is because they have gone down to 28nm so its expected, and why upgrade a gpu if atm its giving you playable frame rates? i would wait atleast till you cant play with your normal settings anymore save abit of money and get either 7xxx series or the 6xx while they are abit cheaper, we still have awhile before the new consoles come out to start worrying about harder games to run (i guess there will be some here n there inbetween but not many)

I'd just stick with the 570 and skip the 7000 and 600 generations. a 570 should have no problems at the resolution you mentioned (<60fps) so what are you actually aiming to gain with going to the 79xx series card?

Yes The Muffin Man is right smile.gif GTX570 should handle at 1080p with acceptable FPS around 40 - 60 I guess. But who knows what a Kepler would do and how much its price? Soon we will find out rolleyes.gif

Yeah, my 570 runs pretty well, im just looking for a bit extra power for those times when the framerate dips, especially in BF3. And I run a mATX setup and dont' wanna upgrade my PSU so no SLI option

>biggrin.gif then i honeslty dont see that you should have any problems. Its up to you but is it worth $500 for perhaps a 20% overall increase, with perhaps only 5% increase visually (assuming that you only drop frame rates 5% of the time). Imo its NOT at all worth it, just my 2c biggrin.gif
