Overclocking 960T in x6 mode have trouble deciding if I am in an ok heat range?

I had a Hyper 212+ and it ran @ 57c (cpu temp not core temp) with a 960T Black Edition with all 6 cores running at 3.8GHz and a vcore of 1.428 it runs at 1.380 when its not under load but my motherboard automatically increases the core voltage under load.

Also that temperature was with prime95 set to max heat mode.

So I have also a Cooler Master v8 and a ULTRA Chilltek Black (with the tec) but its missing screws frown.gif

I hooked up the v8 instead of the 212 and I unfortunately got worse temperatures I was around 62c then I shut it down out of fear frown.gif

I used Antec Formula 7 and followed the directions (mostly). I followed it all except the part about only using 1/4 of a BB sized dot! I honestly think the directions where written when the cpu had a lil 1CM/sq part that you applied the paste to. So I put a 1/4 dot in the middle like it said then I also put 4 tiny tiny dots 1 on each corner and I spread it around like I was told.

The questions I have are

1) Did I put the paste on correctly?

2) Is the 212+ actually better than the v8?

3) Is going above 60c ok? I am used to staying around 50c with the v8 on a 4GHz 555 BE in x4 mode.

4) Does 1.428v sound ok?

Thanks

William

I want to know this as well, i remember that ppl used to advice to not go beyond 50c underload because your cpu can get damage, how much have this change?

1. shouldn't make too much difference as long as it was clean and you only used a little bit.

some do a dot others spread a little, many theories.

2. I would say the 212 would be better at high load.

3. 60C should be your limit.

4.1.428 is fine for voltage.

Are your ambient temps a problem?

You should have an idea if something is amiss maybe you will have to reseat?

Case getting good flow etc not clogged up?

Many variables.

When we talk about these temperature limits are we referring to the CPU TEMP or the CORE TEMP. The reason I ask is because the CPU temp is ~10c higher than the core temp and this is on 2 different boards and 2 different processors. I have an MSI board with a 555BE in X4 @4GHz and I have this 960TBE in X6@3.8GHz going to shoot for 4GHz on all 6.

As far as the case getting good flow CMCASE.jpg

It has a gigantic fan on the front and one on top. Then the rear fan is the same type of high speed fan that comes with the a Hyper 212+ and the side fan is another high speed fan not the same type but of equivalent performance. I am getting a fan controller that has temp sensors to run the 2 smaller case fans which are currently ran by the motherboard and I am not happy with that since they NEVER hit full speed and I know for sure that if the side one is at full speed the CPU temp drops 3-4c VS low speed. The only way to run them at full speed as of right now is to have them ALWAYS be at full speed and that is not going to happen since these fans are loud at full speed.

The big fans are disconnected from the MB and ran at full speed because they are nearly silent even when they are full out!

My 555BE is in a ANTEC900 and I know for sure that thing is cool as can be since the 2 intake fans that normally hold the HDs are empty and the HDs are at the bottom being held by 3.5 to 5.25 converter/HD coolers.

Also I am thinking about putting the Hyper 212+ back in and then creating duct work out of foam board that goes straight to the mesh grille below the CD-ROM. It would only cost $1 to do and I would obviously test to see if it had an impact which I have a feeling that it may. Also I may try continuing that duct work off the back of the cooler and out the back exhaust port. This would allow me to move the rear fan to the back end of the cooler which I noticed does increase the cooling ability of the 212+ by 1c. If I make a rear exhaust I will also seal the sides of the 212+ which may be a good idea anyways since this is what they do on some other coolers to keep the PSI in-between the fins higher.
