You'll like it more now, they sped up leveling tenfold, and removed RNG for end gear. A lot of other things, too.

There are different ways to have a game be f2p, the most popular ways seem to be free to play, freemium, and cash op. All based off micro-transactions.

-Free to play: All content, usually making money via vanity items like skins, outfits, character slots.
-Freemium: All content but has to be unlocked by an ingame currency which is difficult to amass to promote spending real life money. AKA 6300IP EVERY TWO WEEKS FOR THE NEW OP HUEHUEHUEHUE
-Cash Op: Cash shop, buying levels, powerups, op weapons, even locked classes.

Aion will be the first one.

I'll bet he is talking about the Cash-op feature's most FTp game's use in place of a monthly bill. These system's you can buy ingame item's and gear. In some game's you have to spend money on the best of the gear and item's so if you want to stay with the norm you not only have to grind like a mofo but have to spend lots of money to keep your toon "up to date". Most of the time you will spend more money keeping up with the curve in a Cash-op game than you would a subscription based game.

I think a way to think about it is:
Start sub based>move to f2p gain new people who didn't want to pay sub but will do micro
You can start subbed then move to f2p. But can't really start f2p then move to sub

IIRC, LOTR online reported a drastic increase in revenue after it went free to play, so did DCUO. Tons of sites with the info but these are the first two that came up on google.

Curious, can someone show me the link with TOR numbers dropping fast? Last I read it had 1.7 mil in subs alone, I thought meaning that that doesn't count people on the 30 day trial yet. That was news from the start of this month I think I remember seeing. What news has come out since then that shows this dramatic bleed in subs? Interesting none the less.

Most F2P MMOs, I think I agree with him that they end up costing more and they generally provide less content updates.

That's why I am a huge fan of GW1 because it doesnt do such tactics, and they already said GW2 won't either. You will have to spend at most $60-100 over the years on optional stuff if you want it. Like a couple storage panels, more character slots (if 5 really isnt enough), etc. They never will offer $ for weapons/armor/etc unless they are strictly vanity items with absolutely no stats.

Many of the best MMO guilds, that have been around for years, already left due to people just not logging on anymore. There's simply no end game content that is fun. Each month the game is noticably more empty. Less and less people are buying that next month. I don't have solid #s but the many complaints online, and just playing the game clearly shows there is a problem on most of the servers. They will have to merge. There are a couple servers still with lots of population because thats where it seems all the dedicated fans are swarming too.

Hmm news to me then I guess. Then again I don't play according to what "best MMO Guilds" do, I play for myself. I'm in a smaller but expanding guild and our server seems to be growing still, so I was surprised to see people talk of subs bleeding. As for the less and less people subbing, that seems to be impossible to know based on the recent news of subs which has to have been fairly new due to the first month free and the game not being live until the end of December. So again not sure where all of this info is coming from? If someone has a link that goes against the very recent release of seemingly high early sub numbers that shows a sharp decline I would like to see it. Otherwise I will just have to assume this is just an assumption based on what some "best MMO Guilds" have done.
