Not bad. I would use enterprise grade drives like the RE4 though.

Why enterprise grade drives? They're more expensive and if you're doing RAID1 with a hot spare, then you're pretty much fine....right?

i agree, i have been running 24/7 standard WD cavier blacks for 6 months and not one error in my NAS and fairly heavy usage for 3-5hours/day in streaming and other times file upload/down load and back ups thumb.gif my friend uses spinpoints for over a year and never had any issues thumb.gif

Enterprise drives are designed for full load for 24/7 operation as well as being capable of running in extremely close proximity. If you put a dozen drives into a hot-swap box and they're sitting only a few mm away, the drives vibration will throw off heads of the other drives. Enterprise drives have technologies that counter-act this. Standard drives do not.

THAT SAID, I run raid1 with a pair of Samsung HD103sj in my server and I've never had any problems with them, but I've never put them under full load.

ahh yes, i agree here, i have found 2 drives seem ok but i do understand if you have like 12 drives chances are you will have problems with standard drives under full load. smile.gif

If you are running multiple critical systems on the same array you should go with RE level drives. That said, we have dozens of DC's that have been running for 5+ years on a single pair of 80gb consumer sata drives in raid 1. It all depends on how the server will be deployed and what level of support/quality you want/need.

Like I said, in a high density rack (less than 1cm apart) commercial drives will die very quickly and/or have very low performance and/or have a high error rate.

If you've only got two drives in the chassis, commercial drives are more than acceptable.

EDIT: It doesn't matter about the support/quality, enterprise drives are designed for close proximity. Their higher than average life span is just an added perc. If you have a high availability system, you'd better be running RAID 6, even with enterprise grade drives.
