Windows 7 install via USB is impossible now?

So, my DVD drive decided it wanted to die finally. I just fixed my second SSD and wanted to put them back in RAID 0 and re-install windows, so I figured no problem I'll just use the ISO tool and make a USB drive like I did about 2 months ago with no issues. I downloaded the ISO for 64 bit from the microsoft site, and their little tool that worked fine in the past. Now it tells me the ISO is invalid.

Ok, I've had that error before and fixed it with the avdc fixed command prompt program, so I get that and it tells me the ISO is read only. Its not, but it is blocked for some reason. It refused to unblock no matter what. I ran microsoft stream prompt on the entire C:\ drive and no matter what I do it tells me every single folder in C:\ is blocked because its from another computer.... what? I can create a .txt file on my desktop and move it to the C drive and it tells me it is from another computer and I need admin permission to move it. I don't even understand what happened here, I've never had these issues with windows 7.

The only thing I can think is that I never activated it yesterday when I installed it the first time and thats why its giving me a hard time? I didn't activate because I KNEW I was going to re-install it again within a few days once I got the other SSD fixed. Can anyone help me out getting a working USB installer going here? I remember a way to do it with a tool that HP had but it doesn't work with the ISO I have, it errors out when I boot to it.

I've ran into this issue a few times, but use a new tool I found a few times ago.
Let me grab you a link.

It's a Linux ISO tool, but can be used for Windows, as well.

In Step 1, scroll all the way down, and select Windows.
I usually format my flash drives to Fat32.

After the tool installs the ISO, I tend to install some other files on the flash drive (like a notepad with the programs I need to reinstall), and it still works flawlessly.

Good luck! thumb.gif

Thanks, I'll give this a try. This is really irritating, I've been fighting with it for like 3 hours now. Whats bad is I had the USB stick with the installer still on it until a few weeks ago when I erased it to flash the BIOS on a graphics card.

Ok so that doesn't seem to work, it makes a bootable USB stick but it does not image the ISO onto it. Maybe I need to re download the ISO.

Windows 7 ISO download links: Click here for download links (Click to show)

These are 100% legit SP1 copies directly from Microsoft, having a direct Digital River download from Microsoft is the only way you can link Windows 7 downloads on this site. You will still need an activation key to use these copies after the 30 day grace period is over.

Windows 7 Home Premium:
32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium x86 SP1
64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1

Windows 7 Professional:
32-bit Windows 7 Professional x86 SP1
64-bit Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1

Windows 7 Ultimate:
32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate x86 SP1
64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

Make a Windows 7 Bootable USB Installer: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Make a bootable Windows 7 USB:
  1. Open the Start Menu, type diskpart, press Enter
  2. Type list disk, press Enter
  3. Type select disk X (where X is the number your USB drive shows up as), press Enter
  4. Type clean, press Enter
  5. Type create partition primary, press Enter
  6. Type active, press Enter
  7. Type format quick fs=fat32, press Enter
  8. Type assign, press Enter
  9. Type exit, press Enter
  10. Copy everything from the Windows 7 installation DVD onto the USB key (a simple drag and drop will do; if you have an .iso extract first).

I downloaded from those microsoft links last night, and mounting the ISO in daemontools and copying out of it doesn't work. It boots but crashes as soon as the windows installer loads. I guess I better just go buy a new DVD drive, I probably would have been done by now. Thanks for the suggestions though!

So it won't install the iso?
Sounds like you just need a new ISO, and Sean has linked links.

That is what I used, I got both the premium x64 and ultimate x64 just in case, and neither works. mad.gif

Something is wrong with your drive or system or something. Those links have worked multiple times for many people. Are you sure you completely downloaded it?

Do not mount the image. Try simply extracting it with 7-zip, then drag and drop the contents like shown in the video.
