240hz monitors? When will we see them?

Thread Starter
Will this happen anytime soon? Using a 120hz monitor is amazing in comparison to 60hz to the point where going back to 60hz looks awful. I can't imagine how smooth 240hz would look, but does dual link dvi support that at 1080p? And when should we see them?

There are a couple of reasons we won't see it for a very long time - 1. DVI specs state that it only supports 120hz @ 1080 or 60hz @ 1600p, 2. 120hz isn't mainstream yet, nor do i see it becoming mainstream for a few years, many people still don't even have a 1080p monitor. 3. I don't see any real advantages that you would get from an even higher rate, your eyes can only see a certain amount of fps.

240hz does seem like overkill due to diminishing returns...hard to even notice a difference after about 90hz tbh...120hz is perfect.

Never thought about it actually, 240hz would be crazy smooth. But first we need to see ips or va 120hz, because tn 120hz is fugly, I reverted to ips from a 120hz for that reason alone.

I would assume most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference in a double blind test. Also to add most games right now only run engines that are built around 30fps or 60fps. I remember back in the day when I have a CRT monitor that could do 85hz refresh and that was awesome, I can definitely see 120hz catching on in the next 5 years, 240hz though... I can only see that as a gimmick to get consumers to buy more.

This would be nice. I don't think it could get much better after 2560x1600 120Hz IPS. That just about covers everything. Glossy screen would be nice, no AG!

The reason why you'd want a 240Hz monitor is so you can get 120Hz for 3D. Right now for 120Hz monitors you only get 60Hz, because it's split alternating for each eye (and it really is 60Hz and feels like it to). The new Nvidia card feature is that it supports "240Hz Max Refresh Rate", so there should already be 3D monitors that support this.

60hz for 3D is fine considering that you need a killer rig to get 60 fps with high settings in most games. There are barely any true 120hz displays now, it will be years until we get 240hz. Asus did announce the Asus VG278HE which is 144hz, next up are the 120hz VA panels which were announced earlier this year.

unless they are always labeled wrong at the store i work, it has been my observation that "600hz" plasma displays look worse than normal 60hz tvs (to me they look like they're operating closer to 30-45hz)
