Yeah but by getting Ubuntu instead of Windows (7 Professional 64-bit) you would be saving £100.

Overclocking is for more performance in general. Whether you be gaming, compiling, rendering, folding, etc. It's not just limited to gaming.

not to condone or accuse anyone of illegitimately obtaining their copy but I imagine Im about 5 to 20% of Windows users here on OCN that has a legal bought copy.

I researched this before when some guy was trolling in another thread saying Linux was superior to Windows for gaming. rolleyes.gif

You CANNOT run BF3 in Linux. No way, no how. There's several people who have tried, but there's a lot of limitations, as said before, such as DX10 not being supported.

Here's a few links I used when I researched this:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=24663
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=13626

Seems that no one was even able to get the installation to even completely take. So, unfortunately, at least, for the time being, you cannot run BF3 on Linux. Perhaps it will change soon, but as I understand it, there needs to be a bit of reverse-engineering on DX10/11 by Wine to be able to do so.

That's not the reason. Ubuntu is just a far superior OS, the fact that its free (although I donated) just makes it even sweeter...

That picture of Steve Ballmer in your avatar explains your post.

That is quite a biased and narrow view of the world.

Ubuntu is not superior to Windows Server 2008 R2 in the server world. See, you point has been disproved.

Ubuntu lacks two critical features for it to be a superior OS... support and applications. If it is technically superior, it does not make it a better OS without these two features for the mainstream.

Different OSes for different purposes. (I work with WIndows, AIX, Solaris, RHEL so I'm not that biased.)

I honestly don't think 1 is superior over the other. Most of the time when someone says something is superior they're basically saying "I like it better". It all boils down to personal preference and what you use your computer for. Being a gamer and using my PC for gaming pretty much all the time except for some paper writing and online college work, for me Windows 7 is superior. I've set up Ubuntu and Linux and tried them out for a few weeks and they are good OSes. For what I do though I find Windows 7 does a wonderful job. Its quick, easy to navigate and does everything I need well. The only thing ( other than not being able to use them reliably for gaming) I found to be off putting with some of the alternative OSes I've tried is the amount of tinkering it took for me to get them set up to my liking. That doesn't mean the alternative OSes aren't great OSes, they just weren't for me for everyday use. I still tinker with them on occasion when I have some spare time though.(P.S.- All my copies of Windows are legit, I don't pirate software. thumb.gif )
