800~1000 budget i5 2500k SFF build

Thread Starter
I am selling my sig rig to a friend for 800 bucks an will be using that to fund a SFF build.

I do plan to base it around a Micro-ATX mobo or an ITX Mobo, i5 2500K and a SFF Case like the Silverstone Sugo. My budget is 750 bucks, the highest I'll go is 1000 but as usual, the lower the better.

If I do go for a Micro-ATX mobo, what case should I look into ?

I hear the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 is a good place to start for a mobo.
but what is the difference from the non GEN3? ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z

If I do get an ITX mobo, would a sugo case with a 450W psu be sufficient?

what is a good ITX mobo for slight overclocking to 4.0 GHz?

What would be a good upgrade from my 6850 without breaking the bank or buy another?

I don't need a terribly big HDD. So any 1TB or 640 will do?

And what would a good low profile heat sink should I consider?

I already have a keyboard, mouse, monitor, OS, speakers, ram.

Gen3 just means it will support Ivy Bridge without a BIOS update.
A 6870 is about $160 on newegg.
Yes, any 2x4gb kit 1600mhz g.skill memory will work, but I recommend ones without heatspreader.
Since you aren't getting an SSD, I recommend a WD Caviar Blue, but yes, both sizes will be fine.
so yeah, Gen3 means IB support. they will also have PCI-e 3.0 versus 2.0. a lot of manufacturers have already released bios updates to support IB. if you dont care about getting a pci-e3.0 card right away, i would just get the non gen 3 version.

for ram yeah, look for 1600mhz and 1.5v. like azeem said, with smaller form factors the heat spreaders might be a problem. look for some low profile ones. a lot of guys here are recommending samsung's new chips.

i think the best bang for buck gpu cards out right now are the 560 and 6870.

for hdd i would just make sure its 7200rpm.

for HSF, you might want to look into the antec or coolermaster water cooling ones. the kuhler 620 or h60. while performance wise they arent a whole lot better than the air variety but they take up very little space compared to conventional HSFs.

Would an itx build be worth it? AsRock has a Z78 based it'd board for 115 with great reviews, would that board's vrms be able to handle a mild 4GHz overclock?
