SIlverstone GD05B build, need some advice.

Hey Ocn, I have recently picked up a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163166 for a really good open box price and i want to turn it into a fairly decent pc that happens to be for my home theater.

I am completely new to everything hptc, i need some advice on hardware and general things to keep in mind.

I am pretty sure ill will be using a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131711 but cant decide on i3 or i5 cpu. I am pretty sure ill be going for something along the lines of a 560 for a gpu.

One thing i really would like to make sure i get right is sound, as this will be hooked up to my 7.1 onkyo receiver and i want to make sure i give it a good signal.

thanks in advance

Whoa GTX560 for HTPC? What sort of Onkyo AVR do u have i.e HDMI in/out and DTS-HD/Dolby TrueHD capable? Head down to AVS and the pros have tested a simple A6-3500/FM1 cheapo mobo as good to go in madVR's highest quality settings and 3D Blu Ray biggrin.gif One could actually nab a chip/mobo combo for like $129?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.836492

No need for hot, noisy power hogging discrete GPUs for HTPC duty these days as the most current IGP solutions are good to go thumb.gif

Lastly what u need the machine to do : view and record live tv, act as a media server for other 'clients' in your home or simply for playback of digital files and blu ray discs?

I run a 560ti in my HTPC with the same case. If your going to game then go with it. If not then the onboard would probably be sufficient, as a worse case scenario pick up a 5450 or equivalent card and you will have no issues with playback.

The I3 or I5 would be fine. As for sound, your HDMI will send the audio to your receiver, you cannot get any better than that so no need to spend money on a sound card.

Thanks for the replies, it's good to know that i don't really need a sound card.

as for the gpu I managed to get a 560ti twin frozr from ebay for $156 cdn today. sooo that kinda settles that.

My receiver is true hd with hdmi in/out and dts/dolby.

I will most likely be using it as a record and play back type station with a blu-ray drive, but it will also be part of the home network so streaming to other devices is most likely going to happen. I am not really sure about tv yet, I really have to look into that part.

That's basically the same as I use my HTPC for. Movies, streaming, gaming and file sharing / streaming media to other PC's in the house.

Looks good to me. I couldn't fit my wireless card in this case without blocking the GPU fan. I used a USB network adapter but ultimately bought this ASUS PCI Express Adapter, it installs on the back side of my GPU. The motherboard you chose doesn't support one so I would look for a USB adapter. You could install one next to the GPU but air supply to the GPU is so limited as it is you want to keep the slots next to the cooler open.

This mobo would allow you to install a PCI Express adapter next to the PSU, not sure if the mobo offers everything else you were looking for though. Plus it's cheaper wink.gif

ya this wireless card is a little annoying, but it will only be temporary. 6 month kind thing till i move and can hardware it. getting a board with the right layout is a little more of a challenge on these little guys.

May i suggest getting a Powerline ethernet adapter instead of a Wifi card?
It'll be much better than wifi and you won't have to be so picky about the motherboard and lets not forget that it'll be alot cheaper.
