New Gaming / VM Rig - Advice needed!

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

So im starting my new job on Monday and have more than doubled my pay :-D

Therefore one of the first things on my list is a new rig. Now although I could easily get the latest and greatest everything, I have been down that road many a times in the past few years and I have decided that I want to look for bang/buck and expandability.

The system will be used for gaming and VM work.

I will set a budget around £1500 GBP. I don't need a monitor or OS.

I only have six core requirements.

A. Must play the current 'new' games on max @ 1080p.
B. Must contain an ASUS Xonar STX.
C. Has to have 12GB of RAM or more.
D. CPU must be able to clock to over 4Ghz.
E. Must be compatible with intels new IVY chips.
F. Boot drive must be a 250GB+ SSD

I have put together a few system specs but I am not going to reveal them until I have seen what you guys suggest.

Go go go!

All the places I suggest to buy things don't have a presence in the UK.

Basically all u need for a good experience is a 2600k, good Z68 board and a GTX 570

If he's spending 1500 pounds ($2350!), there's room for at least one 7970, though just one should be plenty if you're only playing at 1080p.

All I have are USD comparisons. My suggestion:

i7 2600k - $330
ASUS Xonar STX -$200
Radeon HD 7970 - $550
Silverstone Raven -$170 (lots of great case options available for $100-170... Switch 810, Raven, Phantom, etc.)
ASUS P8PZ68-V Pro Gen3 -$205
Corsair Performance Pro 256gb -$355
WD Caviar Black 1TB -$130
16gb 1600MHz RAM -$90 (G.Skill, Geil, several manufactures offer this RAM at this price point)
Silverstone ST75F-P 750W Modular PSU -$145
CD/DVD Burner -$20
_______________
Total: $2195, or £1395. The extra room in the budget can go towards a number of things, though if anything I'd recommend a better motherboard (ASRock Z68 Professional Gen3 for $255/£162 or ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Gen3 for $270/£172). Alternatively, it could be used to bridge the price gap between components in the US and parts in the UK, shipping, etc.

EDIT: Oh, maybe it could go toward CPU cooling. Kinda forgot about that tongue.gif

That should play games @ 1080p just fine. What were you thinking for parts?

Ok looks good.

Heres what I had in mind, remember that UK prices are higher than US. :-(

Intel Core i7 3820, S 2011, Sandy Bridge-E, Quad Core, 3.6GHz, 10MB Cache, 130W, Retail
Asus P9X79 Pro, Intel X79, S 2011, DDR3, SATA III - 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, PCIe 3.0 (x16), ATX
16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black, PC3-14900 (1866), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-10-9-27, XMP, 1.5V
256GB Crucial RealSSD M4, 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD, MLC-Flash, 500MB/s, Write 260MB/s *New Version*
1536MB MSI GTX 580 Twin FrozR II/OC, 40nm, 4096MHz GDDR5, GPU 800MHz, Shader 1544MHz, 512 Cores
850W PSU, Corsair Enthusiast Series 9020004, Modular, 85% Eff', 80 PLUS Bronze, SLI/CrossFire, EPS 12V, Quiet Fan, ATX
Coolermaster Silencio RC-550 Mid Tower Full Black (In/Out) Silent Case USB 3.0 with 3.5" X-Doc, SD Card w/o PSU
Antec Kúhler H2O 920 CPU Watercooler for S775/1155/1156/1366/AM2/AM3/AM2+/AM3+
ASUS Xonar STX

£1550

I was thinking of this as a cheap way into the SB-E socket 2011 territory. Because I could then upgrade to a new, all singing and dancing CPU when they come out?

I suppose an important question is: Will ivy bridge be coming to socket 1155?

For SSD consider the Plextor M3, Corsair Performance Pro, or Samsung 830 as well.

For cooler I'd suggest a thermalright silver arrow or Corsair H100, the silver arrow will be quieter. But Idk about it fitting in the case you chose.

The case is flexible.

I don't want something that shouts "GAMER" though.

That looks like a great build but I'd change the gtx580 to a hd7970 which draws less power, is faster, has more vram (not that it's going to make a huge difference @1080p), runs cooler, overclocks like a beast etc... Also I'd throw a few better fans in there and maybe look at Fractal Design's R3 -case if you want a silent one.

Ok, I heard many good things about the Fractal Design R3, maybe check that out? And the Corsair 550D should be out soon...

If you can wait Ivybirdge for socket 1155 will be out in april i think it was. But then again it is only like a 5-10% increase in performance...

Thanks for the advice.

I think its a good idea to move to socket 2011, don't you?

I can get the 3820 for less than a 2700k and it buys be into socket 2011, which most boards have 8 DIMM slots (useful to me) and means I will be able to upgrade to whatever beat of a chip intel brings out.

In terms of cases, I want something that does a good job on cooling but is not too shouty. I was looking at the Corsair 650d.

In terms of CPU cooling, I want to use a self contained water kit. I have been down the full blown dual loop, dual res, dual rad road before and to be honest, its a pain. Preferably I want to use a H100, so my choice of case may have to factor in that.

I have a 650D, it is OK for cooling, but not the best. Also, you will need to do some slight mods to it to quiet it down...ex. replace stock fans, cut mesh out, get a fan controller and maybe some sound dampening foam. I am going to finish up silencing mine over summer.
