radiator cooling

ok not sure if this has been asked before.
I need to determine if you getting better air
flow through a radiator if the fans are mounted
flush to it or if you need to put a 1/4" to 1/2" spacer
between the fan and radiator will seal between them
just trying to find out which will help put more air through.

You need to test it. Shrouds help sometimes and sometimes they don't do much at all or can even hurt temps.

ok looks like I'm gonna have to go find some 1/2" Lexon with a little thin layer of foam to seal on each side will work.

Shrouds are generally thought to help. They give the biggest benefit if your fans are in a push configuration as they help alleviate the dead space from the hub of the fan. However using fans in push/pull will give better performance than using a shroud with the fans in push.

well atm what im doing is a push pull on a antec 620. until I can get my w/c setup going. But, for some reason when I went from my aircooling xigmatek aegir to the 620 I jumped about 4 degrees on idle and went up about 4 to 6 degrees at full load. which is telling me something isn't right somewhere and since I know the base is lapped nice and flat and the tp is right it has to be the radiator cooling. or this thing just isn't that good.

When it come to shrouds there pretty much radiator dependent meaning not every radiator will benefit from a shroud, some radiators (Hardware Labs Black Ice SR1) have shrouds built-in. As others have stated doing a push/pull is probably the best way to go, this way you're using the entire radiator cores surface area.

I use push/pull with 25mm shrounds on the push side only - where space permits. The combination of p/p and a 20-25mm shroud on the push side seems to be the best way I 've found to really minimize the airflow dead spot under the push fans hub. I like this configuration in conjunction with Scythe GTs.
The shrouds I'm using at the mo are simply the frames of old 120mm fans with the hub supports cut out.

I'm going to be trying this shroud buisness soon, got 3 Phobya 20mm shrouds to put on my RX360. Going to be on the pull side, hoping it might make a difference atm the moment I'm seeing around a 9-10C Delta t whils't running Prime95 Large FFTs and Looping Vantage on High Preset.

I'll probably post a new thread detailing my findings, maybe throw some pics up aswell. Now that I've got some more temp sensors in my loop might be able to contribute more in this section.
