Skyrim crashes to desktop

Thread Starter
Ok, so up until recently, I had no problem playing for over an hour at a time with no problems. Now it seems to crash every 20 min or so. I'm not sure, but I think it may be related to the fact that I recently started using SKSE. I don't think it's any of the mods I'm using, anyway. Has anyone else noticed SKSE-related crashing, or can you think of any other reason everything would have worked before but not now? Thanks in advance for any help.

I've had the issue twice. A re-install fixed it. Probably corrupted game files.

Edit: I use no mods. But I have played in the console a little.

I just had an CTD like 1 hour ago, I'm alt-tabbing a lot during gameplay and I think it's the problem for me

I just ran a verify game cache in steam, so I'm gonna see how that pans out before I attempt a full reinstall.

Haven't played for an extended period of time yet, probably only 15-20min, but no crashes in that time. I'll repost when I have more time to test this solution.

Have you patched up to the latest patch? I forgot all about that issue...

When the game was released there were issues with the game not using more than 2GB of RAM which seemed to be a major cause of desktop crashing. There was a 4GB mod created which fixed the issue (for me anyway). However, Bethesda eventually fixed the problem with newer patches and the mod is no longer required.

Alt-tabbing to the desktop a lot can also cause crashes, if that applies to you.

Control Panel>Sounds>Playback Devices > Speakers (Or Any Sound Device) > Properties > Advanced and choose Studio Quality 41K 16bit. (says it fixes sound issue but it fixed my C2D) hope this helps.

Doesn't Steam automatically download the latest updates and patches? I almost never use Offline Mode, so if it does, then I should have the latest patch.

I tried this fix when I was having issues with not being able to start a new game at all, and it didn't do anything. Anyway, like I said, I was able to play before with my default sound settings. This is an issue that just came up in like the last week or so.

This was happening to me before. I loaded up another save and it was fine. Might've been just a corrupt save on my part.

Yeah this happened to me before. Just cleared game cache and re-installed and worked fine ever since.
