Extra SSD, what to do?

Thread Starter
At the moment I am using a 64Gb M4 as my OS/MMO drive and I have a Western Digital Black Caviar 1Tb as my Games/music/videos/data drive.

Now I have an extra 64Gb C300 just sitting around and I'd love to do something with it if possible but I am not sure what to do with it. I guess the obvious choice would be to just use it as my extra game drive for steam/origin and install my games on it (even tho my steam folder is 100Gb's but I have DA2 installed EW!).

Another thing I was considering was SSD Caching but I do not believe my motherboard supports it, P8P67 Pro. So I think that option is out the window.

I believe the P8P67 Pro has only 2 Intel SATA 6/gbs ports and 2 Marvell SATA 6/Gbs ports and 4 SATA 3/gbs I think. At the moment I have the Marvell ports disabled just because they don't work as good as the Intel ports and I don't use them. Assuming I am going to use the C300 would I want to use it in the Marvell ports or the extra SATA 3/gbs ports?

Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be a good idea what to do with my old C300 or should I just use it for an extra video game drive?

I find myself in the same situation, and will probably end up using my second SSD for installs.

I have thought about trying it with that FancyCache...

Hmm Fancycache? I might need to look into that, but I don't think my motherboard supports SSD Caching?

I'd love to be able to find something useful to do with my extra SSD to improve general performance, I don't mind using it for extra games but you know if I can do ANYTHING else with it I'd love to experiment.
Move the HDD on to the extra SATA 3Gb/s ports and put the SSD on the second SATA 6Gb/s port...

Use it for games or media editing? I do a lot of image editing so I use my secondary SSD for that atm. Oh and virtual machines, you can have a bunch working at once with a SSD with no issue. biggrin.gif

FancyCache is a program.
No need for the Z68 board with this one. thumb.gif

http://www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/fancy-cache/

I haven't given it a try yet, myself, but I've seen some spiffy results, even with HDDs.

Have any other computers? Typically my spare SSDs go to swap out the default HDDs in my family's laptops.. then I can sell the hard drives at a premium giving the current high demand and low supply

I may do that, might have to trim down my games a bit because my steam library is HUGE!

Pfft just send me the SSD I'm a cool guy I deserve it for being awesome dont I? rolleyes.gif

I wouldn't bother with RAID 0. RAID 0 is not a Mirror it is a stripe array of the data. half the data goes on each drive. RAID 1 is the Mirroring. You will be limited to the slower of the two drives in speed and size. wink.gif

RAID 0 is stripping (for speed).
RAID 1 id mirroring (for backup).

Not that I'd say RAID is all bad, but I understand it's only helping sequential speeds. It's the small reads/writes that really give you the "snappy" performance. Latencies are rather important to that, too, and I think RAID actually would increase latencies...

BTW - there is a fellow on these forums that had used FancyCache. He's where I heard of it.
If I remember his name, I'll let ya know.

EDIT: Kramy! The "Storage Nut". That was it. thanks, Sean. smile.gif
