Vega's *Heavyweight* display and computer; edition 2012 - Page 26

Whoa, this is awsome vega!

great work!

so with you saying that you cant run multiple analog monitors off the GTX 680 i guess this defeats what i want to do by running a u2711+ 17" VGA monitor.. from one card:(

and what hardware are going be using in this build?

Got bored since my third 680 isn't in to run my 3x FW900 setup so I tested one FW900 at 2560x1600 with each applicable game having all settings maxed.

580vs6802560x1600.jpg

The most VRAM use I saw in BF3 was 1930 MB, Crysis 2 was 1971 MB, and the most in Skyrim was 2028 MB, all with no slow-downs with the 680's. The other games were well under 2GB usage.

I am not sure if the limit on the 8x/8x PCI-E 2.0 slots were hurting the 680's more than the 3GB 580's but the 680's in SLI only ended up an average of 24% faster than the 580's. A bit lower than I was expecting.

There was an anomaly that I reproduced having over 100% scaling in 680 SLI Skyrim. If you include that result, SLI scaling is a perfect 100%. If you exclude that result and go off the other four games, the SLI scaling is 90%. Still pretty darn good. As for the reason Skyrim was scaling so incredible in SLI, might be a driver issue with single card as in both instances the GPU's were at max utilization.

That's some major GPU power lmaosmiley.gif But really, the metro2033 results made me giggle a little, didnt know it required that much juice wth.gif

Hm.. So you expect that Quad-SLI scaling could compensate for the massive res that is 3*1600p? You could probably run that but not at >100Hz don't you think?

Also, have you looked into all the hype that's been going around on OCN about those OCable Catleaps?

That's by far one the highest I have ever seen on Metro 2033. Hell, I think two asus mars 2 cards could barley get 49 avg.

Ya, I won't be running 3x 2560x1600. 3x 1920x1200 seems to the sweet spot and Quad 680 should do really well. Although I can comfortably bump that up to 3x 2304x1440.

Ya, I've seen the Korean monitor threads. Even though their internal circuitry can overclock some, they still have slow IPS pixel response times which causes massive blur. If 3-5x 120Hz TN panels are too slow compared to my CRT's, those are even more-so. You would just have to view my setup in person to understand what blur-free lifelike motion with a near seemless image is like. biggrin.gif I am still surprised when I use it!

LCD tech is just inferior for gaming. I think the only thing that will be able to replace my setup is OLED or direct-view surface LED's if they ever get the pixels small enough.

Vega don't worry about the lackluster sli scaling in BF3 with the Nvidia 680 gtxs cause AMD is gonna release some mature drivers which should clear all of that right up!

lol. If you look at the chart BF3 had 94% scaling in my tests. That be pretty good! thumb.gif

This sucks not being able to play any games in my Surround setup until I get the 3rd 680/new MB sorted out. Maybe I need to hook up my 4th FW900 on a side table in landscape to use until then.

Hmm, I was thinking since I am at a decision point with a new motherboard, what would you guys do. This MB will be for my full-on 4-way GTX 680 setup.

Just go ahead and purchase a X79 board now like the Rampage IV Extreme, MSI Big Bang - Xpower II or ASRock Fatal1ty X79 that can do native PCI-E 3.0 at 16x/8x/8x/8x with a 3820/3930k/3960k? Or just get a temp Z68 MB to run 3-way GTX 680 and then purchase the Gigabyte Z77 Sniper 3 when it launches with a 3770k that with a PLX chip can do 8x/8x/8x/8x? I wonder if that PLX chip will lower performance compared to the native speeds of X79.

I am kinda weary about the SB-E chips even under chilled water barely being capable of 5GHz and then regret the purchase if IB launches and can do something like 5.5GHz under chilled water. Thoughts?

Or I could be really crazy and wait for the ASRock Extreme11 X79 that has two PLX chips for 16x/16x/16x/16x but that won't release for another couple months and not sure how much help that super bandwidth will be over native X79 PCI-E 3.0 speeds.

I'd get a temp Z68 for 3-way. Your 5.2 2700K would be better for gaming till IB is out and gives better SLI scaling than 4.8. 8x 3.0 should be faster due to lower overhead. PLX usually only gives 1 fps different at 1600P.
