Well if I was in your position I would get X79 and then keep it until IB-E drops, or perhaps just get the new SR-X. On the other hand it is kinda overkill, but thats what this system is all about after-all tongue.gif

You would also need to think about clock for clock performance, SB-E isn't that much better than SB in single thread, and it can't OC as far as the 2700K anyways. I think you would be better off getting a 3way capable z68 board, then changing to a Z77 board when they come out. Apparently they should be out soon as the manufacturers have already announced them. The 2700K will run in a Z77 board, so you can go to 4way before the 3770K even comes out. The only drawback will be 8x/8x/8x/8x, first at PCIE 2.0, then at 3.0. You will probably not see that much of a performance loss with 8/8/8/8 2.0, because you will not have experienced 8/8/8/8 3.0 unless you have benches for 16/16/16/16 2.0, which don't even exist anyway AFAIK. Just my 2c.

but..... moar cores.... lol I think that trying to spend frugaly in this case the quads make more sense, but the extra power, while not needed per-say, is awesome enough to sacrifice maybe 1-2% in single threaded apps.

Thanks for all of the thoughts guys. To Hydroplane, it looks like April 29th according to the latest leaks, which is still over a month away. The leaks also say Intel is holding onto Z77 boards for the launch so early Z77 is also a no-go. That's too long to be without my surround setup. wink.gif

Maybe I will do a X79 vs Z77 4-way GTX 680 comparo. eek.gif

I don't suppose you can go wrong with going x79, I don't know what constraints you have when it comes to cash but the x79 gives you some solid upgrade options without thew headache of mobo upgrades at least for another year. Although I'm sure you're already aware of that.

The point was that X79 was overkill and unnecessary to max out games better than IB would.

5th GTX 680 inbound (mission critical apps like Surround BF3 need's a replacement backup in case of failure). Couldn't let the 4-way SLI grid be down for too long. biggrin.gif

Yes ofc, who does not have a 500$ card as a spare just in case one gets damaged. I guess you have a spare Mustang in the garage just in case your 1'st one breaks down to? biggrin.gif
