You really can have too large of a display setup for gaming! I also find myself playing more competitively in games like BF3 and Counter-strike on a single display system (CRT).
Single FW900 @ 2048x1280 / 90 Hz, no Fresnel, single water-cooled GTX 680 overclocked to max, Asus Maximus V Gene and 3770K, 2x Vertex 4's for Raid 0 inbound. Everything will be water cooled, hopefully they come out with a MB water block. Phase change won't be a part of the loop anymore, just the current ambient side and the Geothermal side is still a go in the future.
It's amazing how well a single overclocked GTX 680 runs games on a FW900 @ 2048x1280 / 90 Hz. The smoothness and lack of any sort of lag, display response or input is incredible. I can tell the difference between the frame lag that 4-way SLI introduces and single GPU. I am back to the single GPU / single display fan club until those high-resolution / high refresh rate OLED screens come out.
I will make a post in the market section and should have some good stuff for sale. Everything from A+ FW900's, to 680's with EK blocks on them (and I have one sealed box EVGA GTX 680), Vertex 3's, a really nice 3960X, RIVE, etc etc.
I know, quite a 180 deg turn.. I may have ADD. biggrin.gif

Haha you crack me up vega. I'd love to try an FW900, but I don't have the room for it lol.

BTW do the fresnel lens still work well with LCDs? I'm debating the 90hz 1440p monitors in portrait but only if I can go bezel-less

Because of eye strain? frown.gif Visine doesn't help? You're gonna miss the immersion for GW2. I could def see single monitor being better for competitive BF3 though.

I actually have one of the pricey A+ ones for sale (keeping one as spare) but I also have an Accurate IT one that is B+ (screen surface is perfect) that I could let go for a decent price.

You know I never tried one on a LCD. I figure a 27" 1440P is large enough as it is. I think the perfect screen size for gaming is in the 27-32" range.

I will give you that, the immersion factor in GW2 on the setup was just crazy awesome. Far beyond any of my LCD Eyefinity/Surround setups. It was also incredibly smooth. The magnified image was so large though and in order to get the aspect ratio with the lenses just right I had to sit pretty close. It really is like being in the world but I found myself having to move my eyes and head way too much and it was actually a hinderance in PvP. With a single top screen like the FW900 you can get virtually all of the action in central vision and you can percieve and react to things faster. That's why I think you can have too large an image for gaming unless you are going for pure immersion.

Really there are two ways you can go: immersion and competitiveness. It is very hard to do both. I am quite a competitive person so I am going with the new simpler build for that.

Vega don't you think you're getting tired because of the CRT nature itself? After the 5970 with mini-dp and DVI cables I came back to single GPU smoothness and I can tell the difference the 3 DP on my 6970DCII had bring me both in WoW (was already a PITA to run eyefinity in DX11 due to small framebuffer and the lack of multi-GPU support in windowed mode, required for eyefinity resolution) but the real difference was on BFBC2 days prior to BF3... the 6970 OC`d has just the needed power to run it at 50-60FPS even with 8xMSAA and 8xMSAA wasn't achievable again due to framebuffer limitation on my WC'd 5970 at the same 4xAA all maximum settings the 6970 blew away my previous WC'd 5970 in smoothness not power obviously and locked 60FPS with 4xAA 100% smooth was totally achieved by the 6970 . The problem is that I just can't go back to single screen... I was very excited with your comments about SLI'd 680s smoothness, and I was already planning on getting a pair of GK110s when they arrived so I could use 3 x DVI connections hopefully with a bigger framebuffer instead of getting a single 7970 DCII/Lightning and OC it to its maximum while running my setup from 3x DP connections. Honestly I was never too found with your CRT setup, the fresnel idea to minimize the gaps was really clever. But in my opinion your best monitor setup still is the 3x 1080p sansung build that bezels were insanely thin. Right now I'm challenging you to build a 3x Catleap 1440P IPS 2B OC'd to 120Hz =). If the inner bezels are thin enough (I must know that!) this would be the most epic possible 3x LCD high resolution, high refresh rate, IPS setup while keeping the costs ridiculous low compared with 3x sansung 1080P non IPS pannels. And my guess is that it would eliminate your eye sore from CRT+Fresnel.

Oh crap! "Really there are two ways you can go: immersion and competitiveness. It is very hard to do both. I am quite a competitive person so I am going with the new simpler build for that." answered while I was typing.

I would say the tired eyes wasn't because of the CRT, it was the combination of sitting in front of a massive magnified image. Sitting about 2 feet from a 52" screen is great for immersion though lol.

You know I already contemplated 3x IPS 120Hz 2B versions, but I did some research and the pixel response time is way too slow for me (the higher Hz cannot change that). If the 2ms 120 Hz TN panels were to slow, those would be extremely slow for me. Sorry, no more stops on the LCD train for me. It is CRT and then OLED. Like I said Surround/Eyefinity is great for casual gameplay but for more competitive gaming I think it slows you down.

Well I guess if you do the screens in landscape mode, you can disable SLI, and run one screen + one card for competiveness and run three monitors + 2/3 more gpus for immersion depending on the game.

I'm competitive, but I'm not good at fps, so I gave up on trying to minimize lag and just like to make things pretty now, so at least it looks good while I wait to respawn lol.

I'm competitive, but I'm not good at fps, so I gave up on trying to minimize lag and just like to make things pretty now, so at least it looks good while I wait to respawn lol.

I though about that, but I've never been a big fan of landscape as you can see by all my builds lol. I think my eyes are a little more senstive than most as I fly with night vission goggles for hours every night so my eyes are already stressed when I get home.
