Wow. Big turn around.

I'm glad you've joined the single monitor/single gpu club biggrin.gif.

If I could afford it I'd have 1 awesome monitor and 1 2nd tier GPU.

And wow you go through systems quick, just long enough to get used to them tongue.gif.

Hi Vega I have been following your thread for a long time and I hate to say I'm not surprised with the big change. What is your input on SLI with a single monitor as far as micro stutter and smoothness?

Thanks for your input and your service.

Thanks for your input and your service.

Actually, the 680's do quite well in SLI in that regard but an overclocked 680 is fast enough to run all the titles I play really well on a single FW900. My 680's were barely even being used with games like Guild Wars 2 yet I got decent FPS in Surround. I just prefer single GPU as everything is as smooth as technically possible with no delay. (And zero headaches). You would not believe the hours/work it took to get three FW900's working right at a custom resolution/refresh rate. I basically had to bug out the NVIDIA drivers and go around them to Win 7 and message it's settings. My NVIDIA control panel wouldn't even start anymore, but dangit' I had my settings!

I've also noticed putting my FW900 back in portrait it seems clearer. Having them in portrait threw off their geometry just a bit and made them not as clear. Looking forward to getting my parts for my "mini-me" system tomorrow. I also did a test in single display mode with Witcher 2 with DOF which is about the most demanding PC game I have seen with everything max. With one 680 with everything max and no DOF I get around 90 FPS and with DOF I get around 30! So just to get back up to 90 FPS it would take 3-4 680's in SLI, just silly considering the minimal visual improvement. There are ton's of things like DOF that take huge performance to run for minimal gains.

Thanks. I'm in the process.of my new build now and I have everything but the gpu's. I currently have 3 24" screens. I want to get rid of them and get a single large monitor but I figured I would at lease need sli/cf to give me the horse power for 120hz and ultra settings in bf3. I still cannot decide between 7970's or 680's.

I run BF3 with everything on Ultra at 2048x1280 (besides MSAA which I don't need) and can stay above my refresh rate of 90 Hz 99% of the time. If you get a 1440P or 1600P screen and like to run 4X MSAA due to being an LCD I would recommend two cards. 7970's are great cards and really play catch-up in Eyefinity, but I think the 680 is definitely a better card for single screen / multi-GPU. Faster and uses less power + SLI smoothness. If you need a couple of water cooled 680's let me know. wink.gif

More than likely it will be 7970 because of their compute power
This machine will also be boincing. I have a 2P/16 core for 24/7 boinc but also would would like the 3930k cranking points when not gaming. I really want 680s but I think I'm stuck going AMD.

You know I already contemplated 3x IPS 120Hz 2B versions, but I did some research and the pixel response time is way too slow for me (the higher Hz cannot change that). If the 2ms 120 Hz TN panels were to slow, those would be extremely slow for me. Sorry, no more stops on the LCD train for me. It is CRT and then OLED. Like I said Surround/Eyefinity is great for casual gameplay but for more competitive gaming I think it slows you down.

We argued about this back in the BF3 thread way back when the game came out and you would always tell me the opposite in how the three display gave you advantage. wink.gif

Surprised you have changed your mind. tongue.gif

When are you putting the FW900 up for sale in the market? I have a buddy who may be interested in one if the price is right!

Portrait Surround gives you an advantage in some areas, like making it easy to snipe since distant objects are larger. Although in a lot of areas like quick close-quarter combat it is just too big to absorb all of the information on the screen.

The calibrated A+ FW900 that is like new that I would ship isn't that cheap and the shipping would be around $190. But I am willing to entertain offers. The B+ Accurate IT one is much cheaper and available for local pickup only unless someone want's to spring for the shipping.

On another note:

While I was fleshing out all of my GTX 680's to find which was the best over-clocker I found out I have a beast card. I always wondered why this card all the way at the end in my 4-way SLI config operated so much cooler than the others. It is crazy efficient.

1328 MHz core, 3580 MHz memory at stock voltage! Also EVGA Scanner X and OCCT stable at these frequencies. My other three GTX 680's would top out around 1240-1260 MHz core when used on their own.

This core is so efficient it idles at 18 C! Anyone else see clocks like these? It will make a nice single GPU for my new mini-build.
