My desk is big enough to actually support both setups lol. Been looking into those 27" 1440P IPS catleap monitors that you can overclock to 100-120Hz. If I wanted to go real big, I could get five of those for portrait and de-bezel them. That would limit me to AMD though for that particular system, and the 7990 to boot. Stupidly the 6GB cards that still haven't appeared wouldn't even have the necessary outputs for a five monitor setup. The 7990 releasing in July will be the only card to have the ports to do it properly. (4x DP and 1x Dual Link DVI).
The good thing about the IPS screens is with the 5x1 setup I wouldn't run into the viewing angle problems that I had experienced on my previous 120 Hz portrait TN setup. The issue I will run into is that I would need 4x DP->DVI adapters that run at a max of 330 MHz. So that means the monitor's would run at 89 Hz max. Still, that is quite a nice bump up from 60 Hz. Around 90 Hz the pixel response time on those non-overdrive catleap's matches up with that refresh rate. Another large issue with AMD is how will Eyefinity deal/handle those custom refresh rates? Has anyone ever seen anyone run at least three catleap's in Eyefinity at the higher refresh rate?
So the setup would be 7200x2560 resolution, or a gargantuan 18.4 million pixels! Another issue would be; would the 3GB VRAM on the 7990 be a limit? How far would I need to turn settings down? I think I would be alright in most games. Guild Wars 2 didn't use much VRAM at all in my testing. With my Rampage IV Extreme and two water cooled 7990's, they would have their own 16x PCI-E 3.0 slot to swap those massive frames in Quad-Fire.
I think at this point you have just become obsessed with the build and not the result
IMHO; you have the best possible setup right now with the FW900s. If you really want a single monitor CRT setup get another one and take the fourth (or fifth for crying out loud
) 680 from your current setup and throw it on another board with Ivy and fast ram. Maybe you should build a case, leave the monitors alone for a bit and get into modding and you will end up with a whole ton less money spent to satisfy your desire to build something epic lol
